A transnational collection of 18th-19th century material pertaining to three generations of a British Naval family. The collection consists of several generations of Hamond family correspondence, including political, business, naval, and parish letters, as well as a significant number of letters seeking naval patronage, military honors and available ship-board positions. In addition, the collection contains historical accounts, poems, memorials, memoranda and ephemera. The Hamond men were in the habit of recording, after the fact, important political and naval conversations via written "memorandum," including audiences with William IV and Lord Melville. The collection also includes family material such as wills, sermons, genealogical information, memoirs and information on family naval careers.
