Regina Fuchs photographs and travel ephemera from Guatemala

Description: The travel ephemera included in this collection consists of brochures, menus, luggage tags, and postcards primarily produced by United Fruit Company. The photographs show villagers in native attire, some are indigenous people. Of the photographs, approximately sixteen are small snapshots taken primarily aboard ship. The rest of them depict the countryside, villages, villagers, and the hotels and haciendas, in which Fuchs stayed. Some photographs have locations and are identified as Chichicastenango, Momostenango, Huitan, and Lake Atitlan. There are also images of Fiesta de San Isabel, an "Indian Market," the All Saints procession, a local flour mill, dancers, women and children, women rolling tortillas in a plaza, Mayan ruins, and other local sights. There are photographs of three women travelling together; one is presumably Regina Fuchs.

Travel diary and photographs of a trip to Colorado

Visual Materials

A photographically-illustrated travel narrative describing a summer trip from Omaha, Nebraska to Aspen, Colorado in 1926 taken by three women. Traveling by rail on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and then by car, the three women stay in a cabin near Aspen and engage in a wide variety of activities, including socializing with local residents, meeting miners, attending local theater performances, hiking, camping, fishing, and sightseeing. The diarist comments frequently on the outstanding scenic wonders of the Colorado mountains and her impressions of the surrounding nature. Interspersed in the album are 77 black-and-white snapshot photographs and two postcards. The three women, identified only as "Mother, Nellie, and I," are later joined by "Mother Foote and Aunt Hazel."

A collection of photographs of the state of Sinaloa in Mexico, chiefly showing scenes of farms, landscapes, ranch workers and operations, sugar plants, villages, and villagers. There are photographs of sisal plants in the wild and on farms; roadside inns; wagon stops; and a few ranch houses.

This collection contains brochures, clippings, local histories, newspapers, photographs, and programs related to local events in San Gabriel, California and nearby cities. There are many clippings and photographs of Rosita and Vincent Lugo, who were featured dancers in the "Valse Romantico" fiesta scene in The Mission Play by John S. McGroarty. Also included are photographs of La Casa del Rancho San Antonio showcasing rodeos, ranch life, and men posing on horses wearing cowboy-like outfits in the early 1900s. There are also numerous photographs and ephemera related to Lugo's military service during World War II, where he served in the United States Army Infantry Regiment 115th, Company N ("Timberwolves").

Photographic postcards, photographs, and ephemera from the Philippines

Visual Materials

A collection of approximately 300 photographic postcards, 200 color postcards, 200 snapshot photographs, and 23 negatives of people and places in the Philippines. Also included are Philippines postage stamps and peso currency issued under the Japanese government. The imagery covers a range of subject matter and locations within the Philippines, spanning the decades of U.S. control after the end of Spanish colonial government, 1898 to 1946, along with later images dating to 1997. Many postcards have writing and were sent by mail to the U.S. and other locations. Several snapshots appear to have been taken by U.S. servicemen, who also appear in the images with Filipinos. The most recent images are several commercial color postcards produced approximately 1967 to 1997, and a few color photographs from the 1960s to 1980s. Subject matter includes: people in everyday activities, with many Indigenous people represented; social and cultural activities; street and market scenes in Manila and other locations; weaving; religious ceremonies; landscapes; buildings; historic sites; churches; villages; military ships and U.S. servicemen. There are several studio portraits, mostly of women. Please note that this collection contains historical images and language that library users may find harmful, offensive, or inappropriate.
