The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

Series 6J: Getty Trust
Manuscripts
This series consists of materials related to the Getty Trust and other Getty affiliated institutions and programs. Robert Erburu was a trustee of the Getty Trust from 1987-2000, became ex-oficio member of the Getty Board in 1998, and Trustee Chairman from 1993-2000. In addition to meeting minutes, financial statements, and other corporate correspondence, the series includes papers documenting significant events including the construction of the Getty Center and renovation of the Getty Villa. Papers also document the evolving contract and responsibilities of Harold M. Williams, the Getty Trust's first president and CEO (1981-1998), as well as the presidential search and succession of Barry Munitz (1998-2006). Other materials include budget reports; travel itineraries; curators' condition reports for potential acquisitions; institution-generated publications and news releases; and numerous articles referring to the Getty Center or its employees.
