    Adolph Sutro lantern slides collection

    Visual Materials

    About 126 glass lantern slides used by Adolph Sutro to illustrate a lecture on the history of mining in the Comstock, and of the Sutro Tunnel. Size 3¼ x 3¼ inches, in wood frames measuring about 7 x 4½ inches. 38 are hand colored photographs of drawings, mostly of scenes in the mines, 13 are black and white diagrams, 43 are photographs of executed sealed agreements between The Sutro Tunnel Company and the mines, and 31 are hand colored original photographs of the town of Sutro and the Sutro Tunnel.

    Glass plate negatives and lantern slides

    Contains 15 glass plate negatives and 30 lantern slides, some of which are duplicates. Thirteen slides (27-39) do not have corresponding copy prints. They are primarily views of Native Americans on horses (possibly scouts) and desert scenery.

    Huntington Library institutional lantern slides

    Visual Materials

    Over 200 black-and-white lantern slides (photographs) of Huntington Library buildings, employees, library stacks, collections, and art objects. Lantern slides of the Huntington Art Gallery include exteriors and interiors of gallery rooms: Chippendale Room; Renaissance Room; Sculpture Gallery; French Room; New Gallery; Library Room. There are also slides of art objects or paintings. Images of the Library include the manuscripts stacks, the rare books stacks, people viewing books, conservation staff; photographic reproduction; and library staff. There is also a box of 100 lantern slides related to Mark Twain and his works, most likely used for lectures.

    These lantern slides date from approximately 1900-1920s, and are mostly duplicates of negatives or photographs elsewhere in the collection. The slides are in 73 boxes in an arbitrary sequence, and have not been arranged or identified. A few of the slides have original paper labels with handwritten caption information.

    Photographic postcards and other images

    Visual Materials

    Consists of 731 photographic postcards depicting a variety of subjects and locations throughout the Philippines. The images are black-and-white photographs printed directly on postcard stock, primarily 3.25 x 5.5 inches, and most are captioned in the photograph. Some have writing or stamps. There are also 81 color photomechanical postcards, including four reproduced drawings. These postcards were produced in large quantities by photography studios and publishers often based in the Philippines and circulated internationally. A few have credits for studios run by Japanese photographers. Additionally, there are approximately 50 black-and-white photographic prints (4 x 5 inches or smaller) of people and scenes in the Philippines.
