Benjamin Franklin Scribner papers, (bulk 1861-1865)

A collection of 1,100 items from 1838 to 1911, it consists of documents, letters, manuscripts, receipts, orders, muster rolls, and a diary. The collection includes documents detailing general and special field battles such as Buena Vista and Murfreesboro; returns; final statements of deceased soldiers; personnel records; circulars; duty rosters; requistions; and receipts for supplies. The collection includes a diary of Scribner's activities written during the Mexican War from 1846 to 1847 with some pages which were edited by another hand for publication. There are also a few documents relating to Scribner's Treasury work such as indentures and tobacco stamp reports. The collection also contains an 1838 childhood composition book of essays; letters written to Scribner's family; personal and business papers. Correspondents include: Absalom Baird, Don Carlos Buell, William Passmore Carlin, Speed S. Fry, James A. Garfield, Robert S. Granger, Ulysses S. Grant, Milo S. Hascall, Richard W. Johnson, John H. King, Alexander McDowell McCook, O.M. Mitchell, J.S. Negley, William S. Rosecrans, L.H. Rousseau, William T. Sherman, William S. Smith, J.C. Starkweather, and Thomas J. Wood.

The collection consists of the personal and business papers of Henry E. Huntington. There is material related to the Huntington, Holladay, and Metcalf families, but most of the collection deals with Huntington's business interests in Southern California, railways, real estate, and industry. Series 2. Henry E. Huntington and his family includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and physical objects. There is material related to the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and the Pacific Electric Railway Company as well as other businesses in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Gabriel Valley, California. This material includes business records, account books, annual reports, correspondence, maps, tracts, balance sheets, and others. There is also material related to the founding of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens including auction catalogs, invoices, receipts, and bills for art and rare books, and information regarding a lawsuit about Huntington's estate tax after his death, and the passing of Proposition 15, in 1930, which exempted The Huntington from paying California property tax. There is also material related to Collis P. Huntington and his business interests and Arabella Huntington. Also included are the blueprints for the Huntington's San Marino residence. Series 3. Correspondence contains over 22,000 pieces of personal and business correspondence spanning 1794 to 1970. The physical objects include Henry E. Huntington's lunch box, razors, traveling trunk, and other items.

The Wheare letterbook: new insight into the life of John Pym

The material relates to Berquist's journal article on the correspondence (1601-1621) between the English historian Degory (or Digory) Wheare and English Parliamentarian John Pym; it includes research notes, photostats, translations, multiple drafts, and correspondence. The original letterbook (MS. Selden Supra 81) is housed in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

William P. Dole papers

The collection consists of the business papers, including some facsimile copies, of William P. Dole. The bulk of the collection centers around Dole's land acquisitions in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado and his mining interests in Utah, Nevada, and California. Many promissory notes and some deeds may be found in the collection. There are also a few documents related to Native Americans in California and their land tenure. One letterbook (1862 to 1863) in the collection contains letters from Dole while he was Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
