Description

The series consists of thirty-six mounted black-and-white images possibly depicting the mining town of Orijavi, Risko, Finland between 1910 and 1913 during John Daniell, Jr.'s employment as an engineer with the Finnish American Mining Company. The photographs capture exterior and interior views of the mine operations, the miners in a shaft, horse teams moving mechanical equipment, the townspeople, and various buildings. A portrait of John Daniell Sr. is also present in the collection (Box 5).

    The majority of the twenty-nine volumes contain mining journal entries, company reports, financial accounting, and correspondence documented by John Daniell, Sr. during his time at Copper Falls Mine, the Osceola Mine, Allouez Mine, and Cliff Mine located in the Great Lakes region in Houghton County, Michigan. Daniell also recorded his travels, mine assessments, copper stock values and insider speculation, along with personal accounts of daily life. Bigelow and officers of the Bigelow-Clark Syndicate in Boston, Massachusetts.
