    Crane Co. Hydro-Aire records

    Manuscripts

This collection primarily consists of negatives, newsletters, and printed matter related to Hydro-Aire, a division of Crane Co. The two Hydro-Aire newsletters, HYDRO-AIREings and HY-LITES, spans from 1952 through 1974. There are approximately 400 35 mm. negatives and contact sheets. Photographs of interest may be a strike by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation employees, District 727, in October 1956. Also, there appears to be an ad campaign in response to a letter from William K. Kinner, where he accuses Hydro-Aire of being an "unprogressive company" and failing to take "total responsibility" for their braking system. The subject files include material related to two movies, advertisements, and a name change for the "airbus."

    Correspondence, (1936-2005)

    Manuscripts

The bulk of this collection appears to be material related to Jack Real's research about his best friend, Howard Hughes. There are multiple drafts of "The Real Story" and a final draft of "Howard's Last Best Friend," which appears to be an earlier version of "The Asylum of Howard Hughes," (2003). Other research material includes excerpts from various texts, newsletters, aircraft information, correspondence, permission requests, and feedback about the book. It also appears that Real also used the weekly agendas and memos from the Evergreen Aviation & Museum for his book as well.
