    The Civil War diaries and correspondence of Edward E. Schweitzer. Five pocket diaries cover Schweitzer's military service from September 1861 through August 1865. The entries record movement of the troops, war news, minutia of camp life, etc. There are also three letters from Schweitzer to his family posted from Virginia, Louisiana, and Georgia. Also included are his military records including appointments, certificates of discharge, and a muster-out roll of Co. I of the 30th Ohio. The post-war portion includes Schweitzer's diaries for the years 1869, 1884, and 1885, correspondence related to his effort to obtain disability compensation in 1882, and materials reflecting his membership in the veterans' association of the 30th Ohio Infantry. His letter to Jeannie Anderson of March 24, 1870, describes his stay at a sanatorium in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, including staff, patients, etc. Also included is a diary kept by Jennie Anderson in 1867. The collection contains many publications including issues of the Pennsylvania Inquirer (1865 May 25), the Daily News (Petersburg, Virginia, 1865 May 9), Windsor Currier (Windsor, Missouri, 1871-1872) and Newcomerstown Visitor (Newcomerstown, Ohio, 1871). Also included are copies of several books and pamphlets including The old battle fields revisited after 16 years! : a horseback ride from Chattanooga to Atlanta by C.O. Brown (Sandusky, Ohio : Register Printing House, 1880), History of the Thirtieth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry: from its organization, to the fall of Vicksburg, Miss. by Lieut. Henry R. Brinkerhoff, Thirtieth Ohio (Columbus, O. James W. Osgood, printer, 1863), and printed rosters of the 1888 and 1890 reunions of the 30th Regiment. The collection also includes Civil War memorabilia and photographs.

    Wilson Keys diary

    Manuscripts

    Wilson Keys writes in detail about his troops' movements, and his experience in Johnson Island, Ohio, and the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. With the diary is a memo book belonging to Milt Kemble of Ohio with scattered entries from 1861 to 1876.

    John Tyler papers

    Manuscripts

    This collection primarily consists of letters to John Tyler, from 1842 to 1852, many of them invitations to visit or attend various cities, clubs, societies, and celebrations. Correspondence also concerns the Democratic Party, politics; and the 1844 election, party division, and Tyler's withdrawal from the race. Also present are financial records of White House expenses while Tyler was in office in 1844, Tyler's opinion on the published correspondence of Henry Clay, and a document in Tyler's hand regarding the 1830s military leave of absence case of a Lieutenant Schamberg. In addition, the collection contains an 1838 copybook belonging to Benjamin Harker, the son of Benjamin Harker, founder of the Harker Pottery Company in East Liverpool, Ohio.

    John Sproston Papers

    This collection contains papers of Nevada and California mine stockholder and insurance agent John Sproston. The Diaries/Account Books series consists of holographic account books and diaries kept by Sproston and/or his clients from 1856-1879. The Correspondence series (ca. 1875-1883) includes business and personal letters that Sproston received and sent to others. The series also includes correspondence between clients and a small amount of letters that are addressed to Mary E. Sproston. The Legal Documents series is divided into three subseries: Financial Records, Indentures, and Stock Certificates. The Financial Records subseries ranges from 1868 to 1885 and includes receipts, account statements, billheads, checks, and money orders in regards to the estate of F. J. (Frances Joseph) Hammell, a client of Sproston. The subseries also includes receipts regarding the tuition payment of Hannah Sproston's education and room and board, as well as a receipt verifying the payment of Sproston's life insurance policy. The Indentures subseries (1860-1880) includes legal agreements, deeds, and bill of sales in regards to mining grounds from F.J. Hammell's estate and Sproston's personal agreement with the Argonaut Mill and Mining Company. The Stock Certificates subseries dates from 1863 to 1879. Certificates within the subseries are for various gold and mining companies including Allison, Bonny, Consolidated Cedar Hill, Dardanelle, Durgan, Harrison, MaryAnn, and Wells Fargo. The Ephemera series (1865-1885) contains a biography of Virginia Nevada, empty envelopes, announcements, invitations, a miscellaneous note, a baptism certificate, and a diploma earned by May Sproston. The Photograph series is arranged alphabetically by folder title and contains family photographs of the Sprostons and the Hammells. There are also images of family friends, the Lewishan Church, Bow Bridge, Flores Peak, a pulled wagon, and unidentified men and women. Within this series are cabinet cards, tin types, cartes-de-visite (card photographs), and cyanotypes.
