Robert Cleland research collection on Phelps Dodge Corporation

    Manuscripts

The Robert Cleland research collection on Phelps Dodge Corporation consists primarily of chapter drafts written by Arthur Train, Jr., comments from readers at the Huntington, research notes, interviews, history essays, and printed ephemera about the history of the Phelps Dodge Corporation from 1861-1940. The chapter files usually include manuscript drafts, notes, some also include interview questions, excerpts, and photographs. Of note are the interviews, interview notes, and questions conducted by Train in 1939 and 1940. The identification of interviewees is very poor, with some interviews identified only as "Mr. Wilson." Included are index notes created by Cleland for microfilm he made of Train's research and notecards referencing various sources with citations for Train's work. The location and existence of this microfilm is not known. Also included are records from the District Court (1st Judicial District, Cochise County, Arizona), transcripts of a court testimony from the Supreme Court of New Mexico, articles of agreement from the Recorder's Office in Pima County, Arizona, and a smelter register. The contents of two loose leaf binders, which contained miscellaneous information organized by subject with references to the microfilm reels and interviews, has been re-housed in folders. Included is an unpublished and undated typescript entitled Men and Mines: the story of Phelps Dodge by Arthur Train, Jr. and John L. Lawler.

This collection is organized to preserve, whenever possible, Robert Hine's original order. This includes most of his original folder titles, the original order of folders, and the original order of some of the boxes. The collection contains Hine's professional work as a historian of the American West and a writer, and includes research notes, photocopied manuscripts, newspaper clippings, interviews, correspondence, and other research related papers. As such, the original order of Hine's papers reflects his process of collecting and referencing them as he worked on various book projects. In some instances, his original folders provide insight into the kinds of questions or themes he was pursuing in the course of his work. Hine also revised the organization of these papers as he prepared them for donation to the Huntington Library in the late 1990s. Despite Hine's own curatorship, some of his papers remained unsorted and unorganized at the time of this collection's cataloging. Those have been organized by the cataloger to reflect, as much as possible, Hine's own organizational methods.

The collection consists of 6202 black-and-white and color photographs, pen and ink drawings, and postcards, 1412 black-and-white and color negatives, 2606 black-and-white and color slides, and ephemeral materials, 1898-1982 (bulk 1920s-1930s) collected by the Automobile Club of Southern California. They form a general photographic reference collection as well as a broad visual survey of topics of interest to California motorists. Included are images of sites in North and Central America (with an emphasis on California), Europe, the Pacific Islands, and portraits, as well as images related to other subjects of interest to the Club's membership. Many of the images were published as illustrations for articles in the Club's first member magazine, Touring Topics. A large portion of the photographs were taken by authors of articles that appeared in Touring Topics; others were commissioned by the Club; and others appear to have been sent to the Club. Photographers (and authors) include, but are not limited to, Ansel Adams, Fred Archer, Viroque Baker, George Hugh Banning, Adelbert Bartlett, Virginia S. Bartlett, Andrew R. Boone, Julius Cindrich, Norman Clyde, Will Connell, Loyd Cooper, Imogen Cunningham, Asahel Curtis, Edward Sheriff Curtis, Fred Dapprich, E.H. Davis, E.E.
