The collection primarily contains correspondence and documents of Thomas Haines Dudley. Dudley's personal and political correspondence, including 22 volumes of diplomatic correspondence, reflect his entire political career. Also present are 1 volume of copies of Confederate correspondence, documents (including 8 account books and 2 volumes of memoranda), 6 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous pamphlets, photographs, and other printed material. Subjects include Whig and Republican politics; local, state, and national elections and conventions, including the 1860 Republican National Convention; political affairs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including information on Camden and Amboy Railroad and Transportation Company; the politics and government in the New England states, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois are covered to a somewhat lesser extent. There are some items relating to the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Items also document affairs of the American consulate in Liverpool, especially pertaining to Confederate shipbuilding and blockade running, British claims against the United States after the war and efforts to confiscate Confederate property in England, and routine consular matters. This portion of the collection includes photographs and drawings of Confederate ships. Dudley's legal practice and personal affairs, including his interest in political economy, are reflected in his correspondence with Henry Charles Carey. Presidential items in this collection include Chester A. Arthur letter to Thomas Haines Dudley, 1872 February 1 (DU 87); Ulysses S. Grant letter to Thomas Haines Dudley, 1866 March 9 (DU 1820); Andrew Johnson letter to Thomas Haines Dudley, 1865 December 24 (DU 2434).

Subject matter in the collection includes: politics and government in Washington, D.C., and Louisiana; society and customs in Washington, D.C., and New Orleans; Blair House (Washington, D.C.); land titles in Indiana Territory, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Missouri; the Ocean Canal and Transportation Company, which ran from Louisiana to St. Louis; the history of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, from the time of purchase by John Croghan in 1839 until 1932, when it became a national park (at which time Violet Blair Janin was the primary owner); and mining in Australia. Persons represented in the collection include: James Lawrence Blair, Mary Jesup Blair, Violet Blair Janin, John Croghan, William Croghan, Albert Covington Janin, Louis Janin, Julia Clark Jesup, Thomas Sidney Jesup, George M. Contains the Army Record of William E. Carpenter. Fair copy of the Civil War diary kept in Aug. 1862 to July 1865, preceded by an 1871 account book (100 leaves). Both manuscripts fill approximately a half of a blank account book. The diary deals chiefly with camp life: foraging, rations, typhoid fever, hospitals, furloughs, elections of officers, inspections, encounters with Confederate prisoners, war news and rumors; desertions; news about other regiments including newly organized colored troops; "chat" with Ulysses S. Grant. There is also infomration on operations of Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign, including siege and surrender of Vicksburg. Also included are William E. Carpenter's insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic, Civil War leaflets with the texts of "The Veterans are Coming!," by L. Grennan, and "Triumphal March of General Grant's Grand Army", two copies of a leaflet "History of Regimental Colors of the 124th Regiment Ill. Vol. Infantry," by J.H. Howe. (Republican Print: Galbsburg, Ill, s.d.), newspaper clippings, and postcards. Accompanied by the following manuscripts: discharge certificate of William E. Carpenter (HM 60954), "Statistics of the 124th Regt. From Sept. 10 1862 to Aug. 11, 1863) (HM 60955), and the reply to a questionnaire distributed by the U.S. Bureau of Pensions (1904) (HM 60952).
