The collection primarily consists of letters received by Marvin H. Bovee regarding the abolition of capital punishment and Democratic politics, dating from 1850 to 1887. Correspondents include James Buchanan (three autograph letters signed), Horace Greeley, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Horatio Seymour, Gerrit Smith, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, William Cullen Bryant, Charles Sumner, Henry Whitney Bellows, John Greenleaf Whittier, Salmon P. Chase, Morgan Dix, Cassius Marcellus Clay, Theodore Tilton, Fernando Wood, and others; in addition, there is some Bovee family correspondence including two letters from Marvin H. Bovee to his wife. Also present are contemporary copies of four poems, Bovee family obituaries, and a carte-de-visite of Horace Greeley.

The majority of the collection is related to Marvin Sanford and his work in socialism, labor unions, and communism. The collection is comprised of 72 manuscripts, most of which are typescripts of articles by various socialist writers including Daniel De Leon, Samuel A. DeWitt, Edward Keating, Gustavus Myers, Emil Seidel, and Norman Thomas. Also included are articles and research notes written by Marvin Sanford. There are 88 pieces of correspondence, most of which are written to Marvin Sanford and chiefly deal with socialism and politics in California. Authors of correspondence include DeForest Sanford, Charles Pierce LeWarne and the World Socialist Party of the United States. The ephemera is comprised of newspaper clippings, and copies of Sanford's publications "Free Society," "The Searchlight," and "The Voice of Militant Labor." The entire collection covers socialism, communism, and union and labor issues, but more specifically the following topics and people are discussed: Edward Bellamy, cooperative societies including the Llano Colony, Eugene V. Debs, Ricardo Flores Magón, the Industrial Workers of the World, Jack London, and Thomas Mooney.

The ephemera is comprised of newspaper clippings, and copies of Sanford's publications "Free Society," "The Searchlight," and "The Voice of Militant Labor." A collection of 1,229 items from 1799 to 1906, it consists of letters, manuscripts, volumes, diaries, scrapbooks, and ephemera related to the life and work of Horatio Nelson Rust. Subject matter includes: Indian culture in the Southwest; horticulture in Southern California; and the Freedmen's Bureau; there is also material regarding abolitionist John Brown and his family.
