The correspondence documents the state government's attempt to attract immigrants from other states and from abroad, particularly from England, Scotland, and Germany. The correspondence falls roughly into two categories: applications for agents' positions, and requests for literature published by Board, particularly for Jedediah Hotckkiss' "Virginia; a geographical and political summary" (Richmond, Va., 1876) and Matthew Fontaine Maury's "Physical survey of Virginia" (Richmond, Va. 1878.) There are a few items relating to a competition between the Board and various state and commercial agencies promoting emigration to the West and letters from emigration agencies in Great Britain and charitable immigration societies in the state.
