Professional and personal papers of Edward Griffin Beckwith including his journals, ledgers, accounts, military records, and personal and official correspondence, chiefly related to his post-Mexican War service. His journals were kept during his service in California and his letters to his wife recount his life in the West, including details of the death of John Williams Gunnison and his encounters with Mormons. Also included are two annotated maps of New Mexico Territory, California, and Utah, Beckwith's records of spiritualistic seances from 1860 to 1872, and some photographs. The collection also contains letters of John Laurence Fox to his parents, wife, and son written between 1837 and 1864. Included are letters dealing with the Exploring Expedition, the mission to the Mediterranean, slave trade in West Africa, Matthew C. Perry's mission to Japan, foreign intervention in China, Taiping Rebellion, and the American Civil War. This portion of the collection also contains his surgeon's commission in 1847, and newspapers clippings related to the death of Charles Eben Fox.

Adrian H. Joline's three volume collection of items signed by U.S. Secretaries of War (from Henry Knox to Henry L. Stimson), Secretaries of State (from Thomas Jefferson to Elihu Root), and Speakers of the House of Representatives (from Frederick Muhlenberg to Joseph G. Cannon). Volumes contain 248 inlaid signed letters, documents, or individual signatures. Also present are portraits of cabinet members, representatives, and some spouses, and other illustrations--mostly engravings and also a few photographs, some of which are signed. Volumes were compiled in 1912. U.S. presidents in this collection include John Quincy Adams, James Buchanan, Ulysses S. Grant, James Madison, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, James K. Polk, William H. Taft, and Martin Van Buren; presidential items have been individually cataloged.

A collection of 574 items from 1825 to 1890, which consists of the correspondence of Thomas Lyon Hamer, his political speeches and notes, and some papers relating to the Mexican War; Hamer's presentation sword and an oil portrait of him are included in the collection. The correspondence includes 240 letters by Hamer to his first wife Lydia Bruce Higgins Hamer (-1845), and family and friends, chiefly during his congressional service. The letters discuss family matters and Hamer's professional life and political career. There are also approximately 200 letters addressed to Hamer from his friends and colleagues, discussing his legal practice and business affairs, political views, and state and national politics. Correspondents include Lewis Cass, Thomas Corwin, James Hall, Robert Lucas, John McLean, Wilson Shannon, and others. Also included is Hamer's letter to President Andrew Jackson (February 17, 1837) discussing the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838 to 1842.
