James Alvin Bell Papers

Description: This collection contains 135 letters written by James to Augusta during the period 1854-October, 1863, and 141 letters from Augusta to him. The content of their letters is limited to themselves and their limited social sphere. James' war letters provide little description of relevant conditions, but do afford his reactions to the hardships. Another soldier's letters to Augusta (24 in all) during the 1863-1865 period and 12 others written to her after the death of James portray the tragedy of the war. There are other miscellaneous letters, a few of Augusta and James' poems, seven photographs, and some fragments.

This small collection contains 14 letters between James Alvin Bell and Augusta Anna Hallock Elliott and two notes by Bell. Most of the correspondence is personal in nature and Augusta Elliott talks about her teaching job and personal activities. The correspondence does have brief mentions of the Civil War, and in one letter by James Bell, dated 1862 November 28, written from Belle Plains, Virginia, he goes into more detail about his life as a soldier, and talks about General George B. McClellan, General Ambrose Burnside, and President Abraham Lincoln. Many of Augusta Elliott’s letters have poems and watercolors in them. Also included are tintypes of James Alvin Bell and Augusta Anna Hallock Elliott, a letter by Elliott to "Mr. Cooper," a comb, and empty addressed envelopes.

Personal correspondence of James Nowland, chiefly letters written by him to his father and sisters back in England and his wife Helen Augusta Parker Nowland. The letters detail his life in Maine and New Brunswick and recount his Civil War experience. Also included is a copy of the General Order No. 1 issued by Winfield Scott as the commander of the army in Mexico (1847, Jan. 15), and a few family documents

James Henry Gleason papers

These letters by James Henry Gleason are vivid impressions of a colorful period in the history of the Sandwich Islands and of Alta California from 1841 to 1859. These letters have been published by The Arthur H. Clark Company in a book entitled Beloved Sister the letters of James Henry Gleason. There are two unpublished letters. The first was written by Jose Bandini to [James Santiago Johnson] on May 12, 1833 from San Diego, California. The second letter was written by Dorothy Gleason to Agnes C. Conrad on November 17, 1969 concerning an invitation to the 54th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Kapiolani at Iolani Palace. There are also three deeds concerning land lots.

Manuscripts

The James D. Hague papers consist of correspondence, 46 letter books, manuscripts, diaries, notebooks, field books, documents, photographs, maps and drawings. Subject matter includes the family and business affairs of James D. Hague and mining, including the South Sea Expedition of 1858 to 1861, the Calumet and Hecla copper mines in Michigan from 1863 to 1914, and other mining companies in the Western U.S. and in Mexico. Also included in the collection are a few drawings and letters of Mary Hallock Foote; materials related to James D. Hague's father, Rev. William Hague (1808-1887); and Prince Heinrich of Prussia's visit to the United States in 1902. Persons represented in the collection include: Henry Adams, Ellsworth Daggett, William Earl Dodge, Samuel Franklin Emmons, Stuyvesant Fish, James T. Gardiner, James Ben Ali Haggin, Arnold Hague, Edward Everett Hale, Edward Henry Harriman, Henry Holt, Edwin J. Hulbert, Henry Janin, Louis Janin, John La Farge, Raphael Pumpelly, George Haven Putnam, Rossiter W. Raymond, Edmund Clarence Stedman, John Tyndall, Henry Villard, and Stanford White. Mining companies represented in the collection include the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Company, the New Almaden Mining Company, and the North Star Mines Company.
