    An original portrait drawing of Howard Austen by artist Don Bachardy. It is signed, titled, and dated, lower right: "Howard Austen, February 4, 1977 / Bachardy." The drawing is in pencil on white wove paper (23 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.) and depicts Austen seated, in a three-quarter length view, facing the artist.

    Don Blanding Papers

    The collection contains correspondence to, from, and about Don Blanding. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically. The correspondence covers the years of 1948-1958, with the majority in 1948 and 1953. The majority of the correspondence is by Arthur J. Babcock, Don Blanding's literary representative with Dodd, Mead and Company. Arthur J. Babcock wrote to Don Blanding, Dodd, Mead and Company, and several bookshops in California. The majority of the correspondence deals with scheduling autograph book tours for Don Blanding in 1948 for the book Mostly California and 1953 for the book Joy Is an Inside Job. The collection also has 11 photographs and ephemera.

    This collection primarily consists of letters to Don B. and Murray Skinner from other botanists in California and Washington, D.C. The Skinner's were predominantly interested in cacti and succulents and this is reflected in the letters to them, which cover such subjects as botany nomenclature, dudleya, and echeveria. As a result of their expertise in succulents and their involvement in various societies, the Skinner's received correspondence from various botanists of note such as J. R. Brown, H. M. Butterfield, Thomas Harper Goodpseed (1887-), Reid Moran, and B. Y. (Benjamin Yoe) Morrison (1891-1966).Note: B. Y. Morrison letters can be found in Box 2, Folders 27-30, 32, and 35, where the author is listed as United States. Bureau of Plant Industry. Division of Plant Exploration and Introduction.
