    George Jacob Abbot papers

    This collection includes the papers of five New England families related by marriage: the Abbot, Emery, Gilman, Nicholas, and Throop families. Included are correspondence, family photographs, a volume of printer's proofs, and newspaper clippings relating to Daniel Webster. There are not many letters of the Throops, Nicholases, or Emerys. However, the family materials of the Abbots and the family of John Taylor Gilman are more heavily represented. Gilman was a staunch Federalist who engaged in pre- and post-Revolutionary activities. Twice he served as Governor of New Hampshire. George Jacob Abbot's correspondence reflects his friendships with Daniel Webster and Edward Everett Hale. The correspondence between Abbot and Hale covers a wide range of current events, including discussion of Daniel Webster and John Taylor Gilman (1753-1828). There are some incomplete manuscripts, sermons, family photographs included as well as newspaper clippings relating to Daniel Webster. Also present is Franklin Pierce autograph letter signed to Samuel F. Abbot, 1856 April 14 (1 page).

    The collection consists of personal and business correspondence, political papers, account books, legal documents, and land papers related to the Patton family, and is particularly focused on the activities of George Smith Patton (1856-1927). Topics covered include railroads, Patton's senate campaign, irrigation, land sales, and the development of the San Marino area. Notable businesses represented in the collection include the Wilmington Transportation Company, Porter Brothers Co., San Gabriel Wine Company, Alhambra Addition Water Company, the Lindsay Water Development Company, Garvey Water Company, Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Banning Company, Pasadena Electric Light and Water Company, and the Santa Catalina Island Company. Notable individuals represented in the collection include Ruth Wilson, Annie Wilson, Anne Wilson Patton, James DeBarth Shorb, George Hugh Smith, Collis P. Huntington, Henry E. Huntington, Arthur J. Hutchinson, William Banning, William Reeves Banning, James P. Donahue, Maria de Jesus Wilson Shorb, William Howard Taft, Frank Putnam Flint, Ellen Banning Ayer, Robert W. Patton, Arvin Harrington Brown, and Benjamin Davis Wilson.

    Collection of letters and photographs sent from George Emery Caswell to his fiancée Lillian Soltwedel during his army training at Camp Logan, Texas, and while he was serving in Europe during World War I. Also includes letters to Lillian's sister Myrtle Soltwedel from her beaux John B. Deathe and Rene Joseph Sayers, as well as a variety of family photographs and photograph albums and some ephemera.
