The collection consists of 177 letters, two manuscripts, 1 piece of ephemera and 17 newspaper clippings. The majority of the collection is correspondence written to Joseph Oliver Carter (there are only two letters written by him, one of which is to Queen Liliuokalani). The collection contains 10,454 semi-cataloged items andis housed in 72 boxes and 3 oversize folders. The collection documents Loren Miller's four decades of fighting for equality and civil rights and his legal work against racial real estate covenants and discrimination in housing. It contains material related to his work with several organizations including the NAACP, National Urban League and the ACLU. The collection also contains material related to Loren Miller's personal life and family as well as his journalism career and ownership of the California eagle. The collection also contains many items related to Langston Hughes including letters written between Miller and Hughes and copies of some of Hughes' writings. The collection contains the following types of material: correspondence, telegrams, postcards, manuscripts, speeches, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications including full magazines, briefs and other legal documents, brochures, meeting minutes, reports and photographs as well as research notes for and drafts of Miller's book The petitioners: The story of the Supreme Court of the United States and the Negro.

The Manuscripts series contains various poems, stories, and historical accounts written by Samuel L. Kreider. Many of these accounts relate to individuals like Charles Victor Hall and Mary Hall (original homesteaders of Los Angeles' West Adams area), structures like the Los Angeles High School, and other California histories. It also includes notes, reports, and other documents from the Friday Morning Club and its prominent members. Beyond the private papers, this series holds many documents relating to U.S. trade with Japan and the federal General Accounting Office branch in Los Angeles. There is also a Japanese poem. The series is arranged in alphabetical order and then chronologically. The Correspondence series is primarily related to Samuel L. Kreider. Most of the letters are work-related with a large percentage of them pertaining to U.S. trade with Japanese businesses. Moreover, there is also private correspondence. Mr. Kreider corresponded with many locally and nationally prominent people. The list includes, but is not limited to Fletcher Bowron, Herbert Hoover, and Lansing Hoskins Beach. He also has correspondence from C.C. Julian & Royalties Co. The series also contains letters Mr. Kreider wrote to various newspapers and magazines about publishing his historical accounts and stories. Lastly, there is correspondence pertaining to Mr. and Mrs. Kreider's philanthropic work within the Los Angeles High School Alumni Association and the Friday Morning Club. One letter is specifically from Caroline M. Severance. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by author and then by addressee.

The collection contains a wide range of material including research material for his major publications (Hawaiian Antiquities, Pele and Hiiaka: A Myth from Hawaii, and Unwritten Literature of Hawaii: The Sacred Songs of the Hula), correspondence, short stories, essays, poetry, Hawaiian mele, notebooks, biographical sketches, diaries, book reviews, land deeds, wills, affidavits, ephemera, photographs and early drafts of Emerson's published work. The majority of the collection was written, collected or translated by Emerson; however, the collection does contain material by other Emerson family members and notable historical figures of Hawaiian history, such as W. D. Alexander, William R. Castle, Abraham Fornander, Davida Malo, Robert W. Wilcox, and several others. The subjects covered in this collection are: Emerson family history; the American Civil War and army hospitals; Hawaiian ethnology and culture; the Hawaiian revolutions of 1893 and 1895; Hawaiian politics; Hawaiian history; Polynesian history; Hawaiian mele; the Hawaiian hula; leprosy and the leper colony on Molokai; and Hawaiian mythology and folklore.
