Description: Microfilm of a diary kept by Lorenzo Dow Smith primarily from 1886-1888. The opening pages include a description of the Kirtland Temple and assorted diary entries from 1881 and 1885. Most of Young's diary entries focus on his poor health, the weather, attending Temple services, and visiting friends and family in Salt Lake City. He specifically mentions Franklin Richards, Eliza Roxcy Snow, and Feramorz Little, in addition to his many meetings with his brothers, sons, and nephews. He also mentions events surrounding the 40th anniversary of the first pioneer party to Utah, includes a list of donations made to help Franklin W. Young research Young family genealogy, and records the deaths of his wife Hannah and son Brigham (1860-1887). At the end of the volume is a short family record and brief autobiography by Young, recorded in 1887.

Diary of George Laub, volume one [microform]:

Microfilm of George Laub's diary covering approximately 1845-1857, and identified as Volume 1. The volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, many of which appear to have been copied from an earlier source. The first entry is dated January 1, 1845, but entries before about 1855 are not always in chronological order. The early portion of the volume consists of an autobiography recounting Laub's difficult childhood following the death of his father, his arrival in Nauvoo in 1843, the death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the expulsion of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Laub's adoption by John D. Lee, and his marriage to Mary Jane Meginness(who converted to Mormonism before their wedding); a combination of diary entries and autobiographical notes cover his moves between Illinois and Iowa from 1846-1847, persecution and mob violence faced by the Mormons in Illinois, his life in Missouri from 1848-1852, and his overland travels to Utah in 1852. The diary entries from 1855 focus on Laub's laboring on mills and his church activities in and around Salt Lake City through 1857. The volume also contains lists of births and deaths, as well as extensive theological notes, addresses, and prophecies copied from Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Heber Kimball, and Brigham Young.

Diary of William Nelson [microform] : 1877-1900

Microfilm of the diary of William Nelson, kept in St. George from 1877-1900. The first several frames contain a family record for William's grandparents, James Nelson and Sarah Alcock, and a biography of his father Aaron Nelson (1823-1908) and his second wife Selina Palfreyman Nelson (1843-1930). The biography describes Aaron and William's journey to the United States, their work in Salt Lake City, and Aaron's involvement in the Black Hawk Indian War in Sanpete County. William Nelson's diary includes very brief daily entries made from February 1877 to October 1900. He writes of his work shoemaking and of traveling around Cedar Ridge and Parowan playing music, often with his father. Most of the entries focus on his daily activities such as digging ditches and attending choir practice at the St. George Temple, the weather, and news about various family members and acquaintances. The final page of the diary includes notes on William's children.

Microfilm of the diaries of Frihoff Godfred Nielson, covering the years from 1874-1935. The diaries primarily consist of brief entries describing Nielson's daily life in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, including local news, trading with Indians, Church affairs, and agricultural work. The diaries also chronicle his mission to the Northern States and his work on the Temple in Mesa, Arizona. The diaries are arranged on three reels as follows: Reel 1 - 1875-1876 diary identified as "Peters and U.P.R.R., Morgan County, Utah;" a diary dated 1874-1875; and two diaries identified as Sunset, Yavapai County, Arizona, and dated 1876-1879 and 1879-1886; Reel 2 - continuation of the same diary from 1886-1897; a diary dated 1898; a diary dated 1899-1900 and identified as Ramah, New Mexico; and a diary begun at Marshall, Illinois, and dated 1900-1902; Reel 3 - diary dated 1902-1935 and a brief, chronological autobiography.

Diary and autobiography of George Lake [microform] :

Microfilm of the diary and autobiography of George Lake, beginning with diary entries of his mission trip to England from October 1870 to August 1871. Lake appears to have been living at Workington in Cumberland, although he frequently traveled to Newcastle and surrounding areas. The mission entries focus on Lake's attendance of Church conferences and his interactions with local Mormons, including notes on births, marriages, and deaths. The remainder of the volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, and recalls Lake's move to Oxford in Round Valley, Utah, following his return from England in 1871; his flight to avoid polygamy charges in 1874; his being placed in charge of the northern division of Arizona missionaries in 1876, including a list of names of fellow missionaries; and his involvement in creating the United Order at Yavapai, Arizona, in 1877. The volume includes the text of the "last address by Gen. Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Nauvoo Legion in June 1844," followed by a brief summary of Lake's life in 1879. The final pages, in another hand, include a family record with genealogy up through about 1938 and the texts of patriarchal blessings on the Lake family in 1913.
