Six drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Revised Edition, Nos. 3-11, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1879. The issues included in this group are Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 11 and a duplicate of No. 11. Each of these drawing books is 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of brief instructional text, a lithograph image, and space for copying. The exercises increase in difficulty as they progress through each book, and also throughout the series. For example, some of the exercises found in No. 3 are simple curved lines, either used alone or in combination to form ornamental and floral designs. Use of both straight and curved lines continues through books 5, 6, and 7, but increase in complexity and difficulty. In Book No. 11, more attention is paid to angles, dimension, shading and proportion for three-dimensional objects and designs. All of the covers are identical; an ornamental frame surrounds the title. The insides of the front covers provide general instructions for use of the books; the insides of the back covers vary: some are blank, and some contain publisher's advertisements. The back covers also vary, some contain additional publisher's advertisements for books and materials within the Smith system, others contain additional directions for use of the series. Some of the books have been completed by previous owners. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover of No. 5. A paper label made from lined paper is mounted to the front cover of No. 7 and contains the ms. writing: "E. Hinde[?] Principal. Lutie Tompkins. Prov. St., Grade VII." "Lucius Tompkins" is written in ms. along the spine side of the front cover of No. 11 (env. 23), and an additional sheet of original artwork is laid in. Books No. 3 and 5 are smaller than the other books.

Prang & Co., Boston, containing numbered exercises of lithograph illustrations, which emphasize line and form (Book No. 5); construction and representation (Book No. 8); and construction, representation and Roman decoration (Book No. 9). Most of the exercises in each of the 3 books have been copied by a previous owner.

Bartholomew's Drawing Book, Revised Edition, Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8

Four drawing books entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, Revised Edition, Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 8, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1872-1873. Each of these 4 books is comprised of six numbered exercises, which are made up of lithograph illustrations and a blank facing page for copying. Only Book 5 includes significant instructional text for each of the exercises. Book 4 has very few lines of instructional text for some exercises; the other two have none. The levels of difficulty and complexity increase as the lessons progress. The front covers of these books are identical to each other with the exception, of course, of the book number in the lower-right quadrant. Each cover features the title in a decorative font, with decorative flourishes surrounding it. In the lower left-hand quadrant is an image of a gentleman's hand holding a pencil to paper. The book number and the words "revised edition" are in the lower right-hand quadrant of each, with the publisher's information at the bottom. Each book number also appears in the upper left-hand corner, above the title. The insides of the front covers contain general instructions and remarks for each specific book, with descriptions and notes for each of the lessons. The insides of the back covers contain publisher's advertisements; and the back covers also feature publisher's advertisements for various items within "Bartholomew's System to Drawing". The images in Book 4 are primarily outlines of flowers, vases and candlesticks, while the images in Books 7 and 8 are complex scenes of buildings and landscapes which involve shading, perspective and texture. Books 4 and 5 are covered by printed brown paper wrappers, each with a decorative frame surrounding the title "Drawing Book Cover, designed to accompany Bartholomew's System of Drawing to preserve and keep the book clean while in use.", and repeat the advertisements for Bartholomew's System of Drawing found on the back cover of all four books. Each of the four books has been completed by previous owners; some of the images, both the lithograph images and the copied images, have been additionally colored. "Harry S. Tubbs" is written in ms., in pencil and in ink, on the outside wrappers of Books 4 and 5; and is written on the front cover of Book 4. A black ink stamp of "Fred E. Howe" and "Keene, N.H." is stamped on the front covers of Books 7 and 8. "5-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, on the first pages of Books 4 and 5.

Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. Each book contains 20 numbered pages, and numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of very brief instructional text, an image, and space for copying. In Book One, many of the exercises focus on patterns, shapes and designs made from lines and shapes. Book Three focuses more on replication of forms, such as vases, drinking glasses and solids. Some of the exercises in the books have been completed by previous owners. The front covers of each bear the decorative symbol often used on the front covers of Smith instructional books. The inside front cover of Book One contains definitions of terms used throughout the book. The inside back cover gives general directions for the student and teacher, and lists the "principles of design illustrated" in the book. On the back cover is a descriptive outline of the Smith drawing course for the four levels of schools. The inside of the front cover of Book Three contains general use directions and illustrated definitions of "geometrical solids defined and described." On the inside of the back cover are: "Elementary principles to be taught and observed in model and object drawing: freehand." The back cover contains the same outline of the Smith system for the public schools as Book One. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, along the top of the front cover of Book One. "McDonald" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover of Book Three.

Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing, Nos. 1-2, 4-10

Twelve drawing books entitled Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing, by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, and Walter S. Perry, published by Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, 1889. Book No. 3 is lacking, and there are duplicate copies of Nos. 2, 4 and 5, although the previous owners (students) differ for each. All twelve books are 24 pages in length and contain drill exercises on the first 2 pages and numbered exercises on the remainder. The exercises in the earlier books emphasize correct use of lines, both curved and straight, through copying of sample (lithographed) images. The exercises in some of the later books are significantly more complex and focus more on perspective, representation and light and shade. Each exercise consists of 1 or more sample images, textual instruction, and space for copying. Several of the exercises call for the image to be cut from colored paper and pasted in, near the model image. Some of the exercises include: leaves, fruit, decorative designs, plants, geometric shapes and forms, architectural details, buildings and scenes. The exercises within each book progress in level of difficulty, and the series itself progresses in difficulty from very simple to very complex. The front covers are decorated with a small decorative element below the title; on the back cover is a brief list of the materials needed to complete this book. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. Most of the books have been at least partially, if not wholly, completed by previous owners. Some of the booklets also contain colored paper cutouts that have been mounted into the corresponding exercise. Some, but not all, of the booklets have previous owners' names written in ms. on the front covers: "Chester F. Robie" on Nos. 1,4, 5; "Ruth E. Lane" on Nos. 2, 4, 7, 8 and 9; "G. Vernon Talbot" on No. 5; and "Geo. H. Garcelon" on No. 10. "3-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corners of Nos. 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. "Highland School, M.A. Paul" and "17.50" (price) are written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of No. 10.

Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Editions, No. 14 and No. 15

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Edition, No. 14 and No. 15, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, 1883. Each of these two books is 16 pages in length and contain numbered problems and exercises. Many of the problems and exercises focus on angles and lines for developing precision and accuracy. A sampling of some of the exercises covered are: the quatrefoil, division of lines into equal and proportional parts, construction of ornamental forms- design (all from book 14) and tangent lines and circles, circles inscribed and circumscribed, drawing of joints between stones in the elliptical arch and construction of plans for a building. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of primarily instructional text with a small image for copying or use as a guide, and ample space in which to work. The front covers are the same with the exception of the book numbers in the upper left and right-hand corners. The title is surrounded by a simple but decorative frame; an Egyptian aten design is beneath the title and edition statement. The publisher information is below the aten. On the inside of the front covers are General Instructions for the use of each book. Both sides of the back covers contain an illustrated glossary, "Definition of terms" that is specific to each book.
