Description: Two 20-page drawing books by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks and Walter S. Perry, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago. Each book contains numbered exercises that consisting of an image for copying, brief instructional text, and space for copying. Some of the exercises in both of these include: a pattern for a square prism, an envelope, decorative designs, a pattern for a square prism, a bowl of fruit and flowers. Both books have additional colored paper cutouts of some exercises either laid or mounted in; and both have been completed by previous owners.

Two drawing books entitled Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing, Western Edition, Nos. 2 and 6, by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks and Walter S. Perry, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1893. Each of these books contains numbered exercises that consisting of an image for copying, brief instructional text, and space for copying. Book No. 2 is 20 pages in length and contains 1 drill exercise and 18 numbered exercises; Book No. 6 is 20 pages in length and has 20 numbered exercises. Some of the exercises in both of these include: a pattern for a square prism, an envelope, decorative designs, a pattern for a square prism, a bowl of fruit and flowers. Both books have additional colored paper cutouts of some exercises either laid or mounted in; and both have been completed by previous owners. The front covers of each have a small decorative design below the title, with the words "Western Edition" surrounding it. On the back cover of each is a brief list of materials needed and "Suggestions to Teachers" for using that particular book. Within the "Suggestions to Teachers" are additional guidelines for select specific exercises within each book. The insides of the front and back covers of each are blank. "Irving G. Robie" is written in ms., in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover of Book No. 2; "Chester F. Robie" is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of Book No. 6.

Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing, Nos. 1-2, 4-10

Twelve drawing books entitled Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing, by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, and Walter S. Perry, published by Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, 1889. Book No. 3 is lacking, and there are duplicate copies of Nos. 2, 4 and 5, although the previous owners (students) differ for each. All twelve books are 24 pages in length and contain drill exercises on the first 2 pages and numbered exercises on the remainder. The exercises in the earlier books emphasize correct use of lines, both curved and straight, through copying of sample (lithographed) images. The exercises in some of the later books are significantly more complex and focus more on perspective, representation and light and shade. Each exercise consists of 1 or more sample images, textual instruction, and space for copying. Several of the exercises call for the image to be cut from colored paper and pasted in, near the model image. Some of the exercises include: leaves, fruit, decorative designs, plants, geometric shapes and forms, architectural details, buildings and scenes. The exercises within each book progress in level of difficulty, and the series itself progresses in difficulty from very simple to very complex. The front covers are decorated with a small decorative element below the title; on the back cover is a brief list of the materials needed to complete this book. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. Most of the books have been at least partially, if not wholly, completed by previous owners. Some of the booklets also contain colored paper cutouts that have been mounted into the corresponding exercise. Some, but not all, of the booklets have previous owners' names written in ms. on the front covers: "Chester F. Robie" on Nos. 1,4, 5; "Ruth E. Lane" on Nos. 2, 4, 7, 8 and 9; "G. Vernon Talbot" on No. 5; and "Geo. H. Garcelon" on No. 10. "3-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corners of Nos. 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. "Highland School, M.A. Paul" and "17.50" (price) are written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of No. 10.

Prang's Shorter Course in Form Study and Drawing, No. 2 & No. 3

Two drawing books entitled Prang's Shorter Course in Form Study and Drawing, No. 2 and No. 3 by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, and Walter S. Perry, published by Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1888. Each is 32 pages in length and begins with three drill exercises, and continues with 13 numbered exercises which emphasize freehand copying of (lithographed) forms and objects. The front covers contain a single decorative element below the title, and the back cover features an illustrated publisher's advertisement for "Prang's Primary Course in Form Study and Drawing". Suggestions for use and a brief list of materials needed are given on the inside of the front covers; the inside of the back covers contain a publisher's advertisement for "Prang's Shorter Course in Form Study and Drawing for Intermediate and Grammar Schools". The three drawing drills at the beginning of the book are designed to familiarize the student with correct form and use of drawing with a pencil, and emphasize straight and curved lines. The numbered exercises encourage copying from given images and objects supplied by the teacher or student. Each exercise includes an image, brief textual instructions, and space for copying. No. 2: Some of the exercises in No. 2 include an envelope, designs, leaves, and tableware. Most of the exercises have been copied. Two-thirds of one leaf belonging to Exercise XIII has been cut off and is missing. "Esther Gilmore" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover, along the spine end. No. 3: Some of the exercises in Book No. 3 are: a group of fruit; a cylinder; a rosette ornament and a small house. "Matthew E. Welch" is written in ms. along the spine side of the front cover, "2.00" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right hand front cover of both No. 2 and No. 3.

Bartholomew's Drawing Book, No. 2 and No. 3

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, No. 2 and No. 3, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Shepard, Clark & Brown, Boston (No. 2) and by Cyrus G. Cooke, Boston (No. 3), 1855. Each book is comprised of numbered half-sheets on which there is an image to be copied, interleaved with blank whole sheets for copying and completing each of the exercises. The majority of exercises within both books are buildings, such as houses, sheds, and barns. The front covers feature identical design and typeface elements; the title words are above and below an image of a right hand, holding a pencil to paper. The front cover illustration is signed by J. W. Orr., N.Y. Book No. 2 contains 12 numbered exercises (nos. 13-24, not in sequential order). The inside front cover lists 29 questions pertaining to the lessons learned in Book 1. These are followed by "Observations and Suggestions to the Teacher". This copy is lacking the back cover. Book No. 3 contains 9 numbered exercises (25-36: various). On the inside front cover of book No. 3 is a full-page "Note to the Teacher", in which there are outlined 5 general instructions. Both the outside and insides of the back cover are blank. A scene has been drawn on the inside of the back cover. Both books 2 and 3 have been completed, and both contain additional original artwork that is not part of the numbered exercises, and these have been completed as well.

Set of wooden forms circa 1880

One set of wooden forms, untitled, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1880. The set is comprised of a round cylinder, a triangular prism, a cone, a solid circle, an open square, and equilateral cross (looks like a "plus" sign [+]). Each of these forms is painted white, and each has either a small wooden peg or a hole for a peg; presumably they were fit into a base or each other. The top portion of the cone is removable. The two largest items, the round cylinder and the triangular prism, are 8 inches (20.3 cm.) in height; the cylinder is 4 inches (10.2 cm.) in diameter. This set may accompany the set in Box 79. Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Editions, No. 14 and No. 15

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Edition, No. 14 and No. 15, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, 1883. Each of these two books is 16 pages in length and contain numbered problems and exercises. Many of the problems and exercises focus on angles and lines for developing precision and accuracy. A sampling of some of the exercises covered are: the quatrefoil, division of lines into equal and proportional parts, construction of ornamental forms- design (all from book 14) and tangent lines and circles, circles inscribed and circumscribed, drawing of joints between stones in the elliptical arch and construction of plans for a building. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of primarily instructional text with a small image for copying or use as a guide, and ample space in which to work. The front covers are the same with the exception of the book numbers in the upper left and right-hand corners. The title is surrounded by a simple but decorative frame; an Egyptian aten design is beneath the title and edition statement. The publisher information is below the aten. On the inside of the front covers are General Instructions for the use of each book. Both sides of the back covers contain an illustrated glossary, "Definition of terms" that is specific to each book. ".50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of each book.
