1. Correspondence as Director of the Carnegie Observatories

Description

This series follows the organization of the files as they were stored in the Carnegie Observatories' attic. As at the Observatories, the materials are segregated by year. Within each year they are arranged alphabetically (incoming and carbon copies of outgoing correspondence) by named correspondent or subject (annual report, budget, etc.). In some years, correspondents will have their own folder, while in others they have been included in the miscellaneous folders. These individuals' names have been underlined when listed in the miscellaneous folders.

The contents are listed by folder number, folder title, approximate number of items [in brackets], and the names of correspondents [in brackets].

Due to the nature of the position of the director, many letters to others were forwarded to him. In addition, he also received blind copies of correspondence, mainly from MWO or CIW staff. In this organization, the enclosures have been kept with the material with which they were sent. They are noted below in the description of folder contents.

Many of the letters that remain in the "miscellaneous" folders can be categorized as follows: (1) unsolicited requests for employment, (2) "crank" letters by amateurs on new scientific theories, (3) permission to reproduce photographs from the Observatories, and (4) requests for permission to visit the observatories and perhaps obtain a "behind the scenes" tour.

    The chief topics of the Curphey papers are: his work as Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Battered Child Syndrome, air pollution, smoking and smog, aircraft accidents, suicide and suicide prevention, drug addiction and overdose, causes of death, homicides, asphyxia, autopsy, drowning, forensic pathology, forensic science, oral contraceptives, and violent deaths. The collection contains several boxes of glass lantern slides Curphey created for talks that he would give to other physicians. Prior to cataloging, most of the papers were stored in manila file folders with subject headings written in Curphey's handwriting. The current organizational structure of the collection for the most part replicates the classification system of Curphey's folders. In most cases, the contents of his folders were transferred in the order and under the conditions in which they were found. When appropriate and possible, the titles and sequence of Curphey's folders were retained. The original sequence of folders was not retained in those instances where no organizational schema seemed apparent, or when larger thematic groupings seemed preferable. For instance, all of Curphey's papers on air pollution and smoking, suicide, the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, battered child syndrome, and aviation accident investigations have been grouped together within the collection. While the contents of the folders on each of these topics generally replicate the contents of Curphey's individual folders, the folders themselves have been consolidated for organizational purposes and ease of access.

    Approx. 320 items: folder contains Thomas' correspondence from year 1978. Includes: a cross-section of a typical years' correspondence. The bulk of the material consists of routine replies along the lines "I have forwarded your letter to (the department / editor) most likely to be interested." Split into two folders.

    Manuscripts

    The Mount Wilson Observatory Legal Papers comprise one box of material relating to the founding, construction, and operation of the institution dating from 1903 to 1939. The bulk of the papers are legal documents: deeds, leases, utility contracts, and permits. Two folders contain documents relating to legal actions taken against Mount Wilson and the Carnegie Institution. Also included are three letters from John D. Hooker, a Los Angeles industrialist, philanthropist, and founder of the California Academy of Science, announcing his donation to fund the 100" telescope that would bear his name. Other participants include: George Ellergy Hale, Walter S. Adams and Francis G. Pease. The papers are arranged alphabetically according to the person, company, or institution that created them.

    Manuscripts

    The bulk of the collection centers on Scherer's work with the Council of National Defense during the First World War. There are two and half boxes of documents which had been previously collected in two large volumes. The original arrangement (by date) has been retained for both collections (labeled "Bulletins" and "General Letters," respectively) in cataloged form. The "General Letters" collection is the most extensive; it comprises the entirety of Box 2 and the first half of Box 3. In some cases - due to the similarity of their subject material - two or more consecutive listings in the index have been cataloged together in one folder. There are two smaller collections labeled "Noteworthy Activities Undertaken by State Councils" and "I.C.A. Circulars." These two smaller document collections have their own folders in Box 3. All four contain an index - those for the two still-bound collections list the bulletins in the reverse order of their appearance. The two large volumes have been cataloged in the order listed in their indexes.
