Visual Materials
This series contains 42 items pertaining to naval vessels and battles, primarily related to the United States Navy, the Royal Navy of Great Britain, and privateering vessels representing both entities from the early 1700s through the middle of the 19th century, with reproductions from as late as 1977. The series is comprised mainly of printed letters of marque and letters of safe conduct signed by presidents of the United States from George Washington through to James Buchanan, and printed images of famous ships and naval battles. Of note are five letters related to British naval matters from 1703-1804 including two from Admiral Horatio Nelson (priTEC 0184-0188), a British order of battle and sailing with hand-colored flag charts from maneuvers near Alicante, Spain, in 1811 (priTEC 0068), and a bound King William IV association copy of a series of views illustrating the clash between the Shannon and the Chesapeake during the War of 1812 (priTEC 0082).
