The collection was assembled by author and collector Grahame H. Hardy. The documents and manuscripts demonstrate the range of legal, administrative, municipal, and real estate-related transactions initiated by railroad and mining interests, businessmen, and municipalities in the San Francisco Bay area, Northern California, and western Nevada. Included in this series are legal proceedings, title deeds, mining reports and claims. Correspondence includes business and personal letters to and from Northern California lawyers, railroad and mining entrepreneurs in California and Nevada, and parties involved in the construction of the Nicaragua Canal. Included in this series are letters pertaining to the case of Daniel Sill, a San Francisco-based blacksmith and the trial of A.J. Jackson, an African American tried and acquitted in Marysville, California. Lastly, ephemera include four items: a Mission Homestead Association certificate of stock; one check payable to Jack H. Haverly, a promoter of minstrel shows, from theater producers and brothers, Gustave Frohman and Charles Frohman; the baptism certificate of Everett Loftus Saxondale Kenna; and an undated glossary of mining terms. Prominent persons and organizations featured in the collection include: California Academy of Sciences, founded in 1853 as the one of the first scientific academies west of the Atlantic seaboard; Central Pacific Railroad Company, established in 1861 and financed in part by Leland Stanford and Collis P. Huntington, who are also mentioned in the collection; William Heath Davis (1822-1909), San Francisco merchant and author, spouse of Maria de Jesús Estudillo, who played a key role in the founding of the California cities of Oakland and San Diego; John Brooks Felton (1827-1877), San Francisco Bay Area lawyer and judge, as well as one-time mayor of Oakland, California; Joseph Pendleton Hoge (1810-1891), former U.S. Representative of Illinois and later lawyer and judge of the San Francisco Superior Court; and M.G. Upton, former official reporter of the California Assembly and author of the urban planning critique, "The Plan of San Francisco" (1869).

Administrative Series contains records relating to various facilitative operations within the Alamitos Land Company, including, but not limit to, account books, annual reports, appraisals, articles of incorporation, audits, balance sheets, bylaws, correspondence, financial records, financial statements, inventories, ledgers, legal documents, minutes, stock certificates, and titles (property rights). This series is organized alphabetically. A small number of oversize administrative records are stored under the Oversize Series. Commercial Properties Series include a wide-ranging type of records relating to the company's commercial and industrial portfolio. As per the original order, records are grouped under the headings of their respective commercial properties or projects, which include, but not limit to, Alamitos Beach Townsites, Alamitos Tract, Bixby Center, Bixby Ridge, Brawley Beef Packing Plant, Brawley Steam Wells, Firebaugh, Geothermal, Hathaway Apartments, Hathaway Business Park, The Knolls, Long Beach Tidelands, Luckey Ranch, Palo Verde and Spring Retail, Paramount Business Park, Recreation Park, Reservoir Hill, Rosemead Flair Business Park, Signal Hill East Unit, Tract 10548, U.S. Navy Depot, and the Willows Office Building. All commercial properties and projects were located within the State of California. This series is organized alphabetically.

There is material related to the Huntington, Holladay, and Metcalf families, but most of the collection deals with Huntington's business interests in Southern California, railways, real estate, and industry. Series 2. Henry E. Huntington and his family includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and physical objects. There is material related to the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and the Pacific Electric Railway Company as well as other businesses in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Gabriel Valley, California. This material includes business records, account books, annual reports, correspondence, maps, tracts, balance sheets, and others. There is also material related to the founding of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens including auction catalogs, invoices, receipts, and bills for art and rare books, and information regarding a lawsuit about Huntington's estate tax after his death, and the passing of Proposition 15, in 1930, which exempted The Huntington from paying California property tax. There is also material related to Collis P. Huntington and his business interests and Arabella Huntington. Also included are the blueprints for the Huntington's San Marino residence. Series 3. Correspondence contains over 22,000 pieces of personal and business correspondence spanning 1794 to 1970. The physical objects include Henry E. Huntington's lunch box, razors, traveling trunk, and other items.

The John Janney collection contains correspondence and business records related to mining in the early 20th century American West. Included are files related to John Janney's several properties and interests, most of which were in Lincoln County, Nevada, including the Ely Valley Mines, Mountain View Hotel, Pioche Mines Company, Pioche Power and Light Company, and Tenabo Mining and Smelting Company. This collection exists as an extensive and rich documentation of Nevada mining, especially during the Great Depression and World War II.
