Nicolas de La Salle (died 1710) was appointed by the French king as the first commissary in the colony of Louisiana. He was part of the 1682 expedition headed by René-Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle (no relation) which explored the Mississippi River and basin. The French manuscript was based on notes taken by Nicolas de La Salle on this expedition.
