Kashnor notes, "Ratzer's famous plan with the rare view. It is number 41 in Phelps Stokes Iconography. It is the best map of New York at the period, and Stokes states that 'even today much used in searching titles.' Of all the views of New York issued during the eighteenth century this is the finest, and its execution most excellent. There is little doubt that the original view was drawn by Captain Thomas Davies, of the Artillery." This collection contains correspondence and documents primarily accumulated by English civil servant William Blathwayt (1649-1717) in his capacity as a British government official in such roles as Surveyor and Auditor General of Plantation Revenues and Secretary and member of the Lords of Trade. The bulk of the papers date from 1660 to 1709 and chiefly relate to the British colonies in North America and the West Indies .
