- Description
- Betty Jackland, a young white woman arrives in Colonial Nigeria - ignorant and innocent - but ready to endure heat, disease and danger for her husband's sake. Sixty years later, her son Ted arrives to make a documentary film based on her diary. Its pages recreate that time in detail - the life of an isolated woman in the overwhelmingly man's world of the British Empire; the ways of the resident Kitawa and Hausa people; Betty's identification with native servants (including a houseboy who later rises to the rank of spiritual leader) and the ambiguities of "indirect rule". Hovering over the shadowy events of the past and over a present steeped in corruption and violence is a mysterious shaping event toward which the action moves - the 1921 murder by Kitawa women of the new Emir, selected by the British, who meets his fate in the sadow of Tefuga Hill.
