My own experience with the Vasques Bandits
Manuscripts
This manuscript is Snyder's account of his experiences in the mercantile business in Monterey County, California beginning in 1872. He ran a "branch store" and a "hotell." At length and in detail, Snyder describes an incident where his store was robbed by armed "Spanyards," the leader of whom he names as "Vasques." The bandits shot and killed a partially deaf man when he did not heed their demands for him to submit, and shot a second man hiding in a nearby barn. After killing a third man, Vasques declares that "he had only one way to make a living and that was by robbing, and as long as other people had any money he intended to have his Share of it if he had to kill a man to gett it." The bandits did not kill Snyder because he "submitted." The bandits stole eleven horses, including one that had been a present to Mrs. Snyder, loaded them with the stolen goods, and rode away. Snyder called the aftermath "a Mournfull looking Site." He reports that Vasques was eventually captured in San Jose and hanged. With typewritten card containing a brief biography of Snyder.

A photograph album documenting the lives of Seid Back, Jr., Mary Chan Back, and their two children, Dip Gay Seid Back (1915-1983) and Katherine Mae Seid Back Lee (1918-2006). Seid Back, Jr. was the son of prominent Chinese American merchant Seid Back, based in Portland, Oregon. The album begins with a studio portrait of the Back family taken in the early 20th century and continues with the lives of the Back family and friends in locations such as Oregon, Washington, California, and the South Pacific, through the late 1940s. A man who is possibly Dip Gay Seid Back is seen in military clothing at a U.S. encampment; writing on the back says "Men of 13th Gen. Hospital. Dec. 1944. New Guinea." Other photographs show young people, white and Asian, in recreational activities and sometimes posing by new cars or in front of houses. The album depicts the everyday activities of young Chinese Americans during the Chinese Exclusion era, their travels by automobiles throughout the American West, a young Chinese American serviceman in the South Pacific, and interracial marriages between Chinese American women and U.S. servicemen.

Our Country Drawing Book

One drawing book entitled Our Country Drawing Book, by Alfred G. Bauer, published by Sprauge Warner & Company, Chicago, copyright 1903. The front cover shows a young girl sitting at a desk in a classroom, drawing in a book; the lower-left corner bears the series title Bauer Series No.1. The back cover features an image of a can of coffee, labeled "Richelieu, the Finest Product." The book is a promotional piece for the Richelieu brand of canned foods; on the inside front cover the company states "In presenting 'Our Country' Drawing Book, we do so with the assurance that we are adding another educational feature to our advertising methods." The back inside cover shows images of several Richelieu goods. The book contains 16 pages of outline images. It was originally published with tracing paper inserts; only one remains. The image below the tracing paper was meant to be filled in or traced and then filled in. The images include maps of the United States, individual cities, the U.S. Caribbean and Pacific possessions, as well as Nicaragua, Panama (and the proposed canal routes through both countries) and Venezuela. Each of the images includes an advertisement for a Richelieu product. None of the images have been filled in; one of the maps has been traced in pencil. The name "Margaret" is written in ms., in pencil, above one image.
