Description: "In This Is Captured Paper, I create photocollages based upon archival images from the American colonial period in the Philippines. By physically cutting, pasting, and rearranging elements of the images, I aim to deconstruct and critique the colonial gaze, while attempting to reclaim the photographic narrative. I hope that by layering and reshaping images upon images, the cumulative effect interrupts the reading of the original photograph. In some collages, the cut patterns reference textile-makers across the Philippine archipelago, while in other collages, shapes and silhouettes allude to a problematic colonial past. By weaving historical photographs into my own contemporary art practice, I interrogate the lasting influence of imagery that codified colonial power dynamics between the United States and the Philippines."--Jason Reblando

Floyd Dessery Papers
Manuscripts
The collection consists primarily of letters written by Floyd Dessery (1879-1927) to his family, during his deployment in the Philippines, including his mother, Mrs. A. B. Dessery, and his sisters, Hazel and Theodosia Dessery. The collection also includes Floyd's diary from his time in the Philippines. His letters and diary reflect the daily experiences of a foot soldier during the Spanish-American War. Also included are a few family photos, and some ephemera, including clippings, notes, and trade cards.

Photographs in the first subseries are grouped by provinces, cities, or natural landmarks in the Philippines. The photographs were arranged in these locations when received. Besides scenery, the images include residents, houses, hotels, clubs, street scenes, buildings, churches, and agriculture. The second subseries contains photographs by topic, and includes some events in the United States related to the Philippines. There are also images of Steele and notable visitors to the Philippines.

Photographic postcards, photographs, and ephemera from the Philippines

A collection of approximately 300 photographic postcards, 200 color postcards, 200 snapshot photographs, and 23 negatives of people and places in the Philippines. Also included are Philippines postage stamps and peso currency issued under the Japanese government. The imagery covers a range of subject matter and locations within the Philippines, spanning the decades of U.S. control after the end of Spanish colonial government, 1898 to 1946, along with later images dating to 1997. Many postcards have writing and were sent by mail to the U.S. and other locations. Several snapshots appear to have been taken by U.S. servicemen, who also appear in the images with Filipinos. The most recent images are several commercial color postcards produced approximately 1967 to 1997, and a few color photographs from the 1960s to 1980s. Subject matter includes: people in everyday activities, with many Indigenous people represented; social and cultural activities; street and market scenes in Manila and other locations; weaving; religious ceremonies; landscapes; buildings; historic sites; churches; villages; military ships and U.S. servicemen. There are several studio portraits, mostly of women. Please note that this collection contains historical images and language that library users may find harmful, offensive, or inappropriate.

Nineteen gelatin silver photographs featuring frontal and profile views of men and women, possibly of the Manobo, Mandaya, and Bagobo people. The images depict the people's clothing, jewelry, and adornments. Possible locations of the photographs include the Agusan area of Mindanao, Philippines. The majority of the images are set against a white backdrop. Fourteen of the prints are stamped on verso with, "Photograph by the Philippine Bureau of Science, Manila." A previous seller provided descriptions of the subjects' ethic identities and commentary on their clothing; these descriptions were copied and kept alongside the prints for reference, but their accuracy is unknown as they were not added by the subjects themselves or the photographer. The Philippine Bureau of Science in Manila conducted activities based on the American colonial government's efforts to systematize scientific research in the Philippines using Western methodologies and perspectives.

The folder contains two typewritten collages, a typewritten List of Recipients & Signers (1 p.), and a typewritten letter from Dudley to Curator Huntington Library, May 2, 1940 (1 p.). The collages were created in memory of Mark Twain, John Muir, Mr. Huntington and other Americans.
