Beware of the trains : (sixteen stories)

Rare Books

"Beware of the Trains consists of sixteen short stories of detection told with impeccable wit and brilliance. Once again the delightful Gervase Fen, Professor of English Language and Literature in Oxford University, applies his irresistible logic to a series of dark doings which have so baffled the police that they are not always aware of the true nature of the crimes they are investigating. The results are always original, often startling and invariably entertaining"--Jacket.

Sixteen loose prints, with separate binding

Visual Materials

Sixteen loose prints (Env. 8) and binding that may have held them (Env. 9), ca. 1865. Both the images and the binding bear the name, written in ms., in ink, "L.V.P.," "L.V. Palmer" or "Louise V. Palmer", who probably collected and used the images for personal use. The images do not appear to have come from one source. All of the images have been numbered in ms.. Most of the cards depict ruined castles or chateaux and nature scenes. While the binding may have been used to hold the cards, the length of the cards exceeds the proportions of the binding. The name "Louise V. Palmer" is written in ms. on the inside front cover, along with the phrase "Lower Woodstock, 1865". There are also two quotations and the name "Miss Jennie Hubbard." On the back cover there are some Greek letters and the phrase "My Darling" at the top.

The collected shorter poems

Rare Books

This volume brings together all of Kenneth Rexroth's shorter poems from 1920 to the present, including a group of new poems written since the publication of Natural Numbers, drawn from seven earlier books. Among the American poets of the generation that came to prominence in the Forties, Kenneth Rexroth has been notable both for the independence of his personal voice and for his accessibility to the tradition of international avant-garde literature. He began writing and publishing in magazines at fifteen. His earliest work was personal and concrete, much like that of the Imagists. In his twenties he wrote in the disassociative style--sometimes called "literary cubism "--developed by Mallarmé, Apollinaire, and Reverdy. This was not free association, but the conscious disassociation and recombination of the elements of the poem to achieve the highest possible level of significance. With his later books Rexroth moved back to a direct and classically simple form of personal statement. In this period he wrote the great nature poems, the love poems, and the contemplative lyrics that have established his reputation as one of the most important American poets.
