  Manuscript by Ambroise Tranquille Sassard, in French, on the treatment of pain in medicine that was published later in the October 1780 issue of Le Journal de Physique de l'Abbe Rozier. There is a handwritten note by Sassard that translates to "I was 28 years old when I wrote and published this dissertation."

Bernard's work in neuophysiology includes the description of the origin and function of the cervical sympathetic system and examination of the vasomotor innervation of blood vessels. He also gives his description of "Horner's syndrome' as a condition due to lesion of the cervical sympathetic, offereing proof that the sympathetic governs the pupillary, vasomotor, sudomotor, and pilomotor functions. -- Rootenberg, 1987.

The Chevallier d'Iberville was the famous commander of the expeditions that swept the Hudson's Bay from 1694 to 1698. In 1699 he had been created Chevallier of St. Louis, and is best remembered as the colonizer and founder of Louisiana, and died in 1706 at Havana, where he had called on a slaving expedition.
