Journal of a Balloon Ascent by J. C. Sharpe, 1st Book, Chiswick

    Manuscripts

Sharpe's excited and somewhat selfconsciously literary account of the ascension begins with his early morning trip to London, a tour of the Commercial Gas Works of Stepney, a description of the growing crowds and party atmosphere, and Green's preparations for flight. He then describes the ascension itself, with his diminishing view of people, buildings, streets, the city, the Thames, the countryside, the ocean, and Europe. He records his feelings and sensations during the voyage, toasting the Queen's health in sherry, reaching an altitude of 16,000 feet, and beginning their descent. at which point this incomplete account breaks off in mid-sentence.

    Buffalo Bill incoming correspondence

    Manuscripts

This collection of letters detail William F. Cody's investments in a Tucson mining venture known as the Camp Bonito Mine and Milling Company with John D. Burgess. Burgess is a colorful, confident and wildly optimistic person. In one letter dated July 5, 1910, Burgess assures Cody "Cheer up about Bonito! It can't fail for years! Schulite is on the rise! By the time Getch [L.W. Getchell] has made 6 carloads of concentrates you'll be overrun with applications to get into the B.B.B.B. (B's make money)." Approximately a month later, Burgess is reassuring Cody again "You & I can get rich out of those 5 claims if all else fail! But nothing will fail here Bill unless kidney's process fails!" (August 9, 1910). While the venture does not seem to have been a success, it offers a good glimpse into the kind of investments Cody entered, as well as many details about the mining business in Arizona.

Sindh revisited : a journey in the footsteps of Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton : 1842-1849, the India years

    Rare Books

"Sindh Revisited is the remarkable story of the author's fascination with the early life of Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). It is the story of an incredible journey, too - deep into the heart of British India, and the India and Sindh of today." "Christopher Ondaatje's Sindh Revisited is the extraordinarily sensitive account of the author's quest to uncover the secrets of the seven years Richard Burton spent in India in the army of the East India Company from 1842 to 1849. "If I wanted to fill the gap in my understanding of Richard Burton, I would have to do something that had never been done before: follow in his footsteps in India ..." The journey covered thousands of miles - trekking across deserts where ancient tribes meet modern civilization in the valley of the mighty Indus River." "What was it that Burton discovered in India? What was it that changed him from a rebellious, wayward youth into a man of courage, imagination, wisdom and personal power? Through this unique book and the journey it describes, we come nearer than ever before to understanding the mystery of Richard Burton and the devils that drove him."--Jacket.
