The papers document the relations between the U.S. and the Barbary states, the Tripolitan War (1801-05), James Leander Cathcart, naval operations of the U.S. and European powers. Also included are items related to Eaton's professional and personal affairs -- his army career, business transactions, claims against the U.S., and relations with his family and friends. Correspondents include Samuel Barron, James Leander Cathcart, Rufus King, James Madison, Richard O'Brien, Timothy Pickering, and others.

    The collection consists of maps, field books, legal documents, business papers, and diaries related to the work of surveyors George Hansen, Alfred Solano, Sidney B. Reeve, and others. The maps and surveys in the collection are of the city of Los Angeles, Southern California ranchos, and subdivisions of the city of Los Angeles and neighboring towns. The collection contains over maps and sketch maps. Other subjects represented in the collection include: civil engineering, land subdivision, mines and mineral resources, and daily life in Los Angeles and Los Angeles County.

    Partial Diary from Zanzibar

    Manuscripts

    Contains five diaries from Lewis A. Wolfley (1807-1844), an Ohio physician and surgeon in the United States Navy, from between 1829 and 1839. The diaries cover his career in Ohio, service with the Navy, including a month spent in Zanzibar, and studying medicine in Paris in 1836. Some of the physicians and surgeons that Wolfley trained with in Paris include Alfred-Armand Velpeau, Anthelme Richerand, Jean Civiale, Joseph-Francois Malgaine, and Jacques Lisfranc. Medical conditions and treatments discussed in the diaries include uterine cancer, cholera, cleft lip and cleft palate, amputation, lithotomy, gonorrhea, and leech application. The diaries also document Wolfley's experiences on various naval vessels and his travels around the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean.
