Tong Wo & Co. purchase bill of Chinese goods

    Manuscripts

A printed form, filled in: a purchase bill issued by Tong Wo & Co., San Francisco, California, to San Joaquin & Kings River Canal Co., for an extensive list of products worth almost $300.00. The products listed in this purchase bill were presumably meant for the Chinese labor force employed by the San Joaquin company; they were known to employ over 100 Chinese workers in 1872. The products listed on the bill include personal items such as silk jackets, pants, and shirts, silk handkerchiefs, bamboo and woolen hats, cotton shoes, chopsticks, and rice baskets; other commodities listed include gin, tobacco, vermicelli, preserved plums, garlic, and shrimp.
