"Once in a great while, a body of work so different from anything that has come before it, yet so clearly a product of the human life experience, finds its way to the surface. Francesca Danieli has created such a group of pictures, born of her own experiences and coming to terms with her own mortality. The 32 plates reproduced in this book, the artist's first, are as disturbing in their subject matter as they are seductive in their formal beauty. Yet the chasm between anxiety and an all-enveloping warmth is bridged so masterfully in Danieli's unlikely collages of medical afflictions and antique furniture that to look at her work is to surrender all thought of knowing what is what, and instead to embrace a common unknown"--Publisher's description.

This work is the complete report by Ross Terrill - the most sensitive and informed eyewitness study yet written of the people, government and leaders of China. It is the product of Terrill's 1971 trip to China, as one of the first correspondents for an American publication (The Atlantic Monthly) to be admitted after Peking opened its doors. The journey lasted forty days and took him 7,000 miles.

    A spool of blue thread

"It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon." This is the way Abby Whitshank always begins the story of how she fell in love with Red that day in July 1959. The whole family--their two daughters and two sons, their grandchildren, even their faithful old dog--is on the porch, listening contentedly as Abby tells the tale they have heard so many times before. And yet this gathering is different too: Abby and Red are growing older, and decisions must be made about how best to look after them, and the fate of the house so lovingly built by Red's father."--

The Greene and Greene Collection contains a wide variety of materials, from Greene and Greene ancestor, architect/engineer James Sumner's "Memo of the Timber wanted for the Steeple in Providence," dated 1775, and a diary of a European grand tour from 1829 to 1931 by an English ancestor of Charles Greene's wife, Alice, to drawings and photographs of Greene and Greene works from the time of construction through the close of the 20th century. The bulk of the collection dates from 1889 to 1975. Photographs comprise most of the records documenting their architecture. There is a small number of architectural drawings; most of the firm's drawings are housed at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University, New York City, with a smaller collection of drawings from the estate of Charles Greene at the Environmental Design Archives, University of California, Berkeley. The collection is organized into four series: I. Personal papers, II. Office records, III. Job (project) records (including furniture), and IV. Related research materials. In general, the papers and records of both brothers have been kept together for the periods in which they were living together as students and young men, and for the period when they were partners in the firm of Greene and Greene. Within each series, the organization follows the separate lives and works of each brother from the dates at which they diverge. Although the collection has been assembled from many different sources, most items have a unique accession number identifying the donor, so that the researcher can easily identify the source of most documents.
