Samuel Marshall diary
Manuscripts
Diary that Samuel Marshall kept from January 1 to August 9 when he decided to "to close this book and forward it on by mail." The detailed entries contain descriptions of battles and other military operations in South Carolina and Virginia, accounts of camp life, the "boys," living conditions, encounters with local famers and freedmen, etc. Included are accounts of the executions of two deserters from the 6th Connecticut Regiment, three soldiers who died trying to pull a plug from an unexploded Confederate shell "to make finger rings," and an incident when of the regiment's officers was detained by local freedmen who had mistaken him for a Confederate spy. The last portion of the diary contains an essay entitled "The Private Soldier;" an account of the operations in Virginia in May of 1864, including the Battle of Drewry's Bluff (May 14-16) and the operations on Bermuda Hundred Line (May 17-30), with lists of casualties and notes on two privates of Co. E who "shamefully left their Co. in the face of the enemy;" some clothing and supplies requitions and other company records. Also included is a detailed list of battles and campaigns in which the regiment fought from the beginning of the war to 1864.

The collection consists of letters, manuscripts (including 25 diaries and notebooks), documents (including 5 account books), photographs, and 9 scrapbooks related to the life and activities of Marshall Stimson. The collection includes radio addresses of Marshall Stimson and the manuscript of his published autobiography titled Fun, Fights, and Fiesta in Old Los Angeles. There are materials related to California and national politics, including Hiram Johnson and the Progressive Party "Bull Moose" Convention of 1912. There are also materials related to Homer Lea, the League of Nations, and World War II. The collection also contains the diaries of Mary Gordon Stimson, wife of Marshall Stimson.

The addenda contains correspondence, business papers, estate material, diaries, account books, scrapbooks, photographs, and other material related to the work and family of James D. Hague. Other Hague family members represented in the addenda include Marian Hague, his son William Hague, and Mary Hallock Foote. Subjects included in the collection: Clarence King, mining, engineering, Guano Island, South Seas (Oceania), Japan, and the Lick Observatory. Also found in the addenda is a small group of papers of Horace F. Cutter of San Francisco, a friend of Clarence King; and a small group of papers of Edward Singleton Holden, who was an astronomer and Hague family friend. Holden was director of the Lick Observatory, president of the University of California, and librarian of West Point. The addenda also contains unprocessed folders and boxes of ephemera and realia including a chemical set, ore specimens, and printed material; photographs in Boxes 57-63 were transferred to the Photo Archive.
