Description: "Toshio Shibata is well known for his large-format landscape photographs, particularly those made in Japan. Shibata's photographs of mountainsides overlaid by concrete 'netting' and other engineering devices to prevent erosion. Our first book on this work, 'Landscape', was published to wide critical acclaim, and the first printing sold out upon publication. The artist's follow-up book, 'Dam', is perhaps more beautiful yet"--Publisher's description.

Landscape

Rare Books

"In its interior, Japan is mountainous and green. Most of the population still lives along its coasts, but as people slowly move inland, mountainsides are torn away to create necessary horizontal space. To secure the newly exposed inclines, concrete is sprayed and poured onto the vertical plains, or hoisted as pre-poured grids onto the hillsides. Since 1983, Toshio Shibata has photographed these sites. His elaborate compositions and exquisite black and white prints are works of art that record the merging -- and resulting tension -- of Japan's great natural beauty and the craftsmanship of its engineers"--Publisher's description.

Effusus

"Our fifth monograph on Ron van Dongen, 'Effusus' documents the artist’s recent shift to color photography. While the earliest work reproduced in this book dates from 1997, the vast majority of plates were made during the past two years. At the urging of gallerists and curators--bowled over by the early examples they had seen--van Dongen has recently begun to exhibit his color work to much critical acclaim"--Publisher's description.

High fashion crime scenes

Rare Books

"Melanie Pullen's long-awaited first monograph, 'High Fashion Crime Scenes', presents her breathtakingly beautiful works based on vintage crime scene images, first-hand accounts, and documents Pullen mined from the files of the LAPD. In 2002, drawn to the rich details and compelling stories preserved in the criminal records, Melanie Pullen began restaging the vents, outfitting the 'victims' (her selected models) in current haute couture, and photographing them in her staged settings. To create this work, Pullen at times enlisted the help of up to sixty people per shoot: set builders, makeup artists, models, stylists and stunt crews, among others. Her models have included the actresses Rachel Miner and Juliette Lewis. The collection of more than one hundred images has received considerable critical acclaim in the national and international press"--Publisher's description.

Lana : photographs made of a single locale : a book

Rare Books

"Terri Weifenbach has received international acclaim for her gorgeous, vividly colored landscape photographs--and deservedly so. She has been described as 'the Emily Dickinson of photography' and the work in this new book can only strengthen her reputation as a truly original force in contemporary art. Weifenbach creates images based on seemingly unexceptional pastoral scenes that become quite extraordinary through her masterful presentation of their subject matter. Sometimes a whole picture is shot out of focus, or perhaps just one detail--a leaf, a bud, a blade of grass--is sharply focused, commanding attention, while the rest gently recedes into a soft and mellow blur. The results are breathtaking as, dream-like and entrancing, they evoke gentle memories of hazy summer days. The images for this, the artist's third monograph, were made in Lana, a small Italian village nestling in the mountainous South Tyrol"--Publisher's description.

A clearing

Rare Books

"Following up his richly emotive debut collection, Ray Meeks expands the range of his vision with equally stunning technique, suggesting visual rhymes between the sentient and the inanimate, between stratigraphic lines and telephone wires, between a bulldozer’s tread marks and a boy’s ribcage. Whereas his earlier book, Sound of Summer Running, invited us inward, into the expressive interiors of family and place, a Clearing presents us with a world that averts its face, a world we haven’t yet learned to read, where meaning still seems to be gathering itself, where verticality is a sign of defiance. Figures in the landscape appear so isolated, they take on mythic force. The sky is resistant as eyes turned back in a head. Meeks’s camera records the naked geological and human assertion of presence against the flattening insistence of time, erosion, and poverty. In a Clearing, the world speaks itself in a language of origins: stone and child and woman and man cry out from elemental silence, Look, I am here. The first printing of this gorgeously-produced artist’s book is limited to 500 numbered and signed copies, each with an original print on the back cover"--Publisher's description.
