"Langer follows the tradition of the flâneur-photographer. His images are, as he puts it, the product of 'walking the streets alone as a stranger in a strange land.' To shadow Langer on his walks is to visit the haunts of amusement parks, lonely bars, nighttime streets and alleys, beautiful women and their chaperones, gardens, hotels, and supper clubs. Both the still life and the intimate figure study are frequent objects of his quiet gaze. Regardless of their subject, Langer's images return us to a place where what happens in front of the lens is unanticipated and distinctly photographic"--Publisher's description.

The secret Paris of the 30's
Rare Books
One of the most evocative photographic memoirs every published. It was known that Brassai had taken a series of 'secret photographs' which could not be published because of their daring nature--the forbidden Paris, a sordid bas-monde where high society mingled with the underworld.

Cannery Row
Rare Books
This is a segment of the underworld on the California coast near Monterey. A group of rootless men, who took jobs only as a last resort, lived contentedly in an old warehouse; nearby Dora ran her house of prostitution with business efficiency, and in his marine laboratory Doc prepared the specimens he collected along the shore. Love for Doc was the sentiment that all Cannery Row shared, and the climax was the fearful birthday party given for him.

South Central
Rare Books
"Renowned for his modest yet powerful photographs that capture the sense of displacement and isolation felt by many young Americans, Mark Steinmetz photographed in and around Knoxville, Tennessee to create the work that makes up South Central. The title of the book is derived from the South Central Bell telephone company that serves Knoxville, and their public pay phones are a recurring theme in this work; an iconic reminder of the area's socio-economic condition. The artist possesses an uncanny ability to pull folly, aggression and tenderness through his lens simultaneously, and delivers with this book a powerful and touching visual novel of the human condition"--Publisher's description.

Monegros
Rare Books
"Monegros, Spain is a hilly semi-arid region with extreme climatic conditions. During the course of my research, I was fascinated by the visual impact I found there. Resulting from the evolution of complex patterns in farming practices, in Monegros, many generations of working the soil has created a successive series of divisions that makes the most efficient use of arable land with available water. Seen from above, the visual interplay of this cultivated space within the topography of its landscape expresses and extraordinary sensibility to me. The resulting photographs represent some of my most abstract, 'painterly' work to date"--From artist's introduction.
