Hartland Law letter to Mrs. R.L. Stephans

    Manuscripts

Form letter from Dr. Hartland Law to Mrs. R.L. Stephans, on Lake Tahoe Protective Society Association letterhead. The letter seeks Mrs. Stephans' signature on an enclosed contract and subscription form regarding the "fixation of the levels of the surface of Lake Tahoe." He notes that the matter "has been long in controversy" between the Association, local power companies, and the United States Reclamation Service, and that the Association has sought to prevent the use of the lake as "storage" for "utilitarian interests." The letter claims that such use that would have raised the surface level of the lake high enough to damage lake front structures and would sometimes have allowed it to sink low enough to cause "unsightly exposure of the shore line." The letter describes specifics of high water levels, the widening of a lake throat, record low water levels, and the use of the lake for irrigation. The letter further states that, as part of an agreement with the Department of the Interior, boating and railroad interests would be preserved. He concludes that there would be no interference with removing lake water for agricultural irrigation in Nevada. Includes subscription form and envelope.
