A collection of scrapbooks and clippings of Thomas Nast cartoons, and one original drawing

Description: A collection of scrapbooks, clippings and tear sheets of political cartoons by American cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902), primarily from Harper's Weekly (1868, 1872, 1874-1881), with others from the Insurance Observer (N.Y.) (1896-1897), the New York Gazette (12 pgs., May 15, 1892), and unidentified sources. There is also one ink drawing of the "Tammany Tiger," depicting a tiger on the prowl, lettered and signed by Nast (undated). Most loose illustrations (clippings) are individually mounted on boards. The clippings in scrapbooks are adhered to paper pages, and most have dates and names of publications. There is also a folder of four Nast illustrations of Santa Claus from the pages of Harper's Weekly, 1879 and 1881.

Thomas Nast scrapbook related to the Heenan-Sayers heavyweight fight

Disbound scrapbook of pencil sketches made by American cartoonist Thomas Nast while traveling to and in England to cover the heavyweight boxing match between Englishman Thomas Sayers and American John C. Heenan on April 17, 1860. This scrapbook contains sketches Nast made before, during, and after the fight (though there are very few drawings related to the fight itself). Most of the drawings, which include rough sketches and more polished drawings, reflect the settings and people that Nast encountered between his arrival in England in February 1860 and the fight on April 17th. Images depict sailors and officers on the ship the City of Manchester, ship interiors, coastal landscapes, individuals and scenes in English towns, including both street scenes and room interiors. Details related to the boxers include their colors, rooms, and the boxers preparing with their trainers. In addition to the drawings, there are also photographs consisting of: a carte-de-visite of Thomas Nast (Page 1-a, 90-b, 91); James Price Jr. (Page 2-a); Captain James Price (Page 2-b); Tom Sayers (Pages 17-a, 59-a, 68-b, 68-c); an unidentified man (Page 45-f); Cusick (Page 46-d and 48-d); Nat Langham (Page 49-d); Bob Brettle (Page 50-e); an unidentified young woman kneeling next to a fallen horse (Page 53-c); a fragment of a garden and building (Page 82-a); and a man and woman (Page 82-b). There is also an engraved portrait of Nast (Page 90-c) and a playbill for the Haymarket Theatre Royal, 1885 July 15, removed from the album's back pastedown.

Collection of letters of Thomas Nast and his family -- Sarah Edwards Nast and Thomas Nast, Jr. There are twenty five letters by Thomas Nast, chiefly addressed to his wife, written during his trips to England and Italy to cover the Heenan-Sayers prizefight and Giuseppe Garabaldi's military campaign in Sicily (1860), (this group also includes six letters addressed to William Luson Thomas, 1830-1900), the tour of Pennsylvania battlefields in the summer of 1863, the trip to Washington in the beginning of 1872, his 1873 lecture tour, and from Guayaquil, Ecuador (1902). Also included are three letters from Sarah Edwards Nast to her husband (1859 and 1869). There is also a copy (in the hand of Mrs. Nast) of a satire of Andrew Johnson ("So sayeth King Andy Johnson"), perhaps a caption to a political cartoon.
