This is the complete story of the unique RDC, a speedy self-propelled rail motor car, bristling with the latest rail innovations. This book discusses how the cars were built, their controls, and the various railroads that purchased them. Also considered is the RDC-9, the design changes of 1956, and modifications and re-builds by Morrison-Knudsen. There is a section about stainless steel and the "shotwelding" process, and a biography of the late Edward G. Budd. The large appendix section includes a description of each railroad than ran RDC's, how they were utilized, a complete roster, and a map showing the route of the RDC's.--Adapted from jacket.
