In the wake of the pioneers : novel

Manuscripts

Manuscript of a novel by Heber R. Woolley, originally written under the pseudonym of Joshua Tobin. The novel tells the story of Johnny Grant, a devout Mormon living in Salt Lake City in the second half of the nineteenth century. It opens with a sixteen-year-old Johnny (born "ten years after the first band of Mormons had come to Deseret") growing up in a polygamous family as the son of the neglectful Bishop Grant and his second wife. The novel traces Johnny's life as he tries and often fails at a variety of business endeavors, moves to Idaho, serves on a mission to England, and is made a Bishop. It also tells the parallel story of Johnny's less-devout wife, Martha. Toward the end of the novel, Johnny leaves the Church and turns to Darwin and Freud, at one point declaring that he has become an atheist. The story is set against a backdrop of debates over polygamy and tithing, and is apparently intended to criticize perceived hypocritical doctrines of the Mormon Church.

The longest journey

Rare Books

"E. M. Forster once described The Longest Journey as the book "I am most glad to have written." An introspective novel of manners at once comic and tragic, it tells of a sensitive and intelligent young man with an intense imagination and a certain amount of literary talent. He sets out full of hope to become a writer, but gives up his aspirations for those of the conventional world, gradually sinking into a life of petty conformity and bitter disappointments"--Goodreads.

Love among the artists

Rare Books

With his inimitable wit and sparkle, George Bernard Shaw brings us the character of Owen Jack, a salty non-conformist composer said to have been suggested by Beethoven. The relations between Jack and the other wayward bohemians of the story with the more conventional socialites around them offers shrewd insight into the nature of the artistic temperament, with its need for a kind of commitment that overrides the everyday claims of the heart. A novel which anticipated Shaw's first plays by more than ten years, Love among the artists shows him already mocking the respectable morality of the Victorian society around him.
