William Montgomery McGovern was an American adventurer, anthropologist and journalist. He was possibly an inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones. McGovern claims he had to sneak into the Tibet disguised as a local porter. As Time reported in 1938: With a few Tibetan servants, he climbed through the wild, snowy passes of the Himalayas. There, in the bitter cold, he stood naked while a companion covered his body with brown stain, squirted lemon juice into his blue eyes to darken them. Thus disguised as a coolie, he arrived in the Forbidden City without being detected, but disclosed himself to the civilian officials. A fanatical mob led by Buddhist monks stoned his house. Bill McGovern slipped out through a back door and joined the mob in throwing stones. The civil government took him into protective custody, finally sent him back to India with an escort.--Wikipedia.

Colcord apologizes for the delay of his response, which "deferred my desired interview with Major Heiss." He writes that the major informed him that Norton's credentials are "of the highest and most satisfactory character" and that his prior contributions "to the paper was in all respects first class." It is Colcord's hope that Norton shall be given "renumerative employment on the editorial staff." He extends an invitation to Norton's family on behalf of himself and his wife. The majority of the material in the collection concerns the financial interests of Benjamin Adams and Thomas Adams in Jamaica. Benjamin Adams was owed a significant sum by Jamaican landowner George Noble. Upon Noble's death (ca. 1790), Adams entered into proceedings via attorneys James Corne Pownall and David Duncomb to recover this debt. The process was severely complicated by the revelation that the cane plantation overseen by Noble, known as the Lottery Estate in Trelawney, Jamaica, was not actually owned by him. After Benjamin Adams' death in 1792, the affair was taken up by the executor of his will, his brother Thomas Adams. The collection consists of autograph letters and copies, statements of bills and accounts, estate dealings and promissory notes; included is correspondence with, among others, William Cruden, William Morton Pitt and David Ross.
