In this letter, the 1st Earl of Eldon is talking about politics and clearly shows his lifelong antagonism towards any form of republicanism. He states "The plant of Republicanism grows rapidly and I grieve to hear that some good & true men are meditating hard on what Regulations it can be best encouraged...."

The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

This book celebrates, in words and full-color photographs, the adventure of living in the world's most astonishing city. The author's Venice is at eye level, a labyrinth of impressions, a museum of delights for that vanishing man, the walker. Although only the experience of living in Venice will fully accustom the visitor to a fact so unique, Wright Morris combines words and photographs to recapture the essence of this experience, sharing with the reader impressions of a particular moment in a fabulous place--Adapted from dust jacket flap.

Visual Materials
This collection contains approximately 10,000 photographs, negatives and ephemera created or compiled by Grace Nicholson (1877-1948), a collector and dealer of Native American and Asian arts and crafts in Pasadena, California. The bulk of the collection dates from 1903 to the 1920s and includes photograph albums and individual photographs with views of Native Americans of the Northwest Coast, California, and the Southwest of North America; pictures documenting Nicholson's basket collecting trips primarily between 1902 and 1912; images of Nicholson's stores and residences in Pasadena, including the building of the "Grace Nicholson Treasure House of Oriental Art" in the mid-1920s; and personal photographs of Nicholson, her family, friends, and associates. Nicholson's personal snapshots and photograph albums provide a valuable resource for studying Native American communities, particularly in Northern California, in the early 20th century. Many of the photographs depict daily life and include images of homes, community events, dances and rituals, families and children, and portraits. Most of these photographs were taken by Grace Nicholson or her assistant, Mr. Carroll S. Hartman, and are often accompanied by Nicholson's handwritten identifications.
