Photographer Renate Ponsold has been in a unique position to photograph some of the most influential people in the arts and letters of the past thirty years. Such artists as Duke Ellington, Sonia Delaunay, Erick Hawkins, Henry Moore, Edward Albee, Man Ray, Klaus Kinski, Frank Stella, and Virgil Thomson are captured at work and at leisure, thoughtful, laughing, grave, but always, thanks to Ponsolds gift, truly alive. Many of the photographs (109 of them are richly reproduced in duotone) are amplified by Ponsolds anecdotal reminiscences about the people portrayed. In addition, Eye to Eye includes an important essay by noted critic Dore Ashton.
