Description
The inaugural (and only?) issue of the newspaper to be published under the auspices of the Indiana Colonization Society and edited by Rev. James Mitchell (1818-1903), a Methodist minister, abolitionist, and agent and Secretary of American Colonization Society of Indiana. The initiative was most likely related to the planning of the trip to Liberia made in the early 1850s by Rev. John McKay, a Black Methodist minister and Indiana agent in the African country. Issue includes a mission statement, notes for the postmaster, letters to editors, overview of national and state "colonization newspapers," sample constitution for colonization societies to be established in towns, text of the petition to Congress, etc.
