"Built in 1459-1465 on one of the finest sites in the world, the ḥarēm of the Sultans of Turkey in Constantinople gradually rose to be the most mysterious, dreaded and unapproachable place in existence. So jealously have its secrets been guarded during the whole period of its existence, that even after the Sultans ceased to reside there, in the middle of the 19th century, the ḥarēm still remained as unknown as before. Owing to a sequence of fortunate chances and unusual facilities, Mr. N. M. Penzer has been able to lift the veil of secrecy that has hung so long over this forbidden place and to lay bare for the first time what strange things lay hidden beneath. Not only has he inspected the whole Palace from end to end during numerous visits in two consecutive years, but he has obtained photographs of certain parts that have resulted in the making of the most complete plan ever attempted. "Bill Jay's impressive career in photography was launched in his native England, where he became the Institute of Contemporary Arts' first Director of Photography. In the early 1970s he moved to New Mexico to study with Beaumont Newhall and Van Deren Coke. He founded the program of Photographic Studies at Arizona State University, and taught history and criticism classes there for the next 25 years. In short, with over 400 articles and 20-plus books to his credit, it would be an understatement to call Jay a doyen of the photographic world. Over the years, he has met and photographed many photographers, and written 'verbal snapshots' to accompany each one. "Here at last is Pauli Murray's powerful poem, 'Dark Testament,' and forty-nine other of her poems, collected between two covers. Virtually hidden for 22 years while its author pursued her destiny as a civil rights and women's rights champion and, at the same time as an attorney and professor of law, 'Dark Testament' speaks so eloquently of the plight of black Americans that it might have been composed yesterday. Dr. Murray won her badge of honor as a civil rights activist in the Forties -- long before the Freedom Rides -- when she was arrested and jailed in the South for refusing to be segregated and when she led student sit-ins in all-white restaurants in the nation's capital. As a poet she was a protegé of Stephen Vincent Benét and was encouraged by Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Jean Starr Untermeyer, Lillian Smith, and many others. The title poem of this volume inspired Morris Milgram, who wrote the introduction, to start a career of developing genuinely integrated housing.
