Rare Books
Collection of more than 80 catalogs and gallery guides of exhibitions installed from 1929 to 2022 at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. The catalogs were intended for the reference use of the Library's Chief Curator of Rare Books and are often annotated with the call numbers of the Huntington holdings ues in the exhibits. The catalogs represented here focus primarily on the Library exhibit spaces: the Main Library Exhibit Hall and the West Hall. Later publications also record exhibits in the Dibner Hall of Sciences and the Boone Gallery. A few concern related exhibition material in the Art Collections. These catalogs represent the most comprehensive record of which library copies were displayed, especially for the years 1931-1975. Notations about the availability of photostats, facsimiles and slides as well as installation dates are included on some catalogs. Some catalogs have multiple copies marked for the Curator, Rare Book Stacks and the Exhibition Office. Material dated after 1980 shows fewer annotations, and are primarily in the form of gallery guides, rather than catalog listings of items on display. Additional unannotated Huntington publications regarding the collections are also included (e.g. Preliminary handbook of the art collections).

Materials related to Dana Gioia's work as a poet, essayist, and editor as well as his roles as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Poet Laureate of California. The Writings series is divided into Poetry, Other Writings, and Publications, and includes drafts, galleys, published versions, and reprints of Gioia's poems, essays, and other writings, as well as notes, correspondence, reviews, and other related documents. The Professional series includes materials related to Gioia's work with the NEA, including documentation of his NEA nomination and confirmation; his congressional testimony; reports; publicity; and working documents and correspondence related to NEA programs such as The Big Read, Poetry Out Loud, NEA Jazz Masters, and others. There is also correspondence, press coverage, a scrapbook, and other documentation of Gioia's tenure as California Poet Laureate; and materials related to his 2007 Stanford University commencement address, including drafts of the speech, responses, and reprints. The Correspondence series is comprised primarily of Gioia's letter and email correspondence with other poets, publishers, and scholars, and also includes some biographical and other material related to each correspondent. The Broadsides and posters series includes poetry broadsides authored by Dana Gioia and others, and a few posters related to Gioia's poetry.

The collection contains 10,454 semi-cataloged items andis housed in 72 boxes and 3 oversize folders. The collection documents Loren Miller's four decades of fighting for equality and civil rights and his legal work against racial real estate covenants and discrimination in housing. It contains material related to his work with several organizations including the NAACP, National Urban League and the ACLU. The collection also contains material related to Loren Miller's personal life and family as well as his journalism career and ownership of the California eagle. The collection also contains many items related to Langston Hughes including letters written between Miller and Hughes and copies of some of Hughes' writings. The collection contains the following types of material: correspondence, telegrams, postcards, manuscripts, speeches, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications including full magazines, briefs and other legal documents, brochures, meeting minutes, reports and photographs as well as research notes for and drafts of Miller's book The petitioners: The story of the Supreme Court of the United States and the Negro.
