William Davenport & Co. account book relating to ship voyages, 1777-1784

    Manuscripts

An account book of William Davenport & Co. relating to voyages made by the ships Ann, Liverpool, Hero, Swift, and Hector, trading between Liverpool, Old Calabar, Sierra Leone, Dominica, Antigua, and Kingston, Jamaica. A huge variety of different articles shipped out on these voyages are recorded, among them clothing, fabrics, beads, foodstuffs, tools, cutlery, wine, guns and gunpowder. These items presumably were intended for sale both in Africa and the West Indies. Also listed are various sales of slaves in Jamaica, Dominica, and throughout the West Indies. The volume is written in two directions with the text beginning at one cover then turned over and beginning again (tête-bêche style) and contains entries written in several hands; with original paper labels titled in manuscript pasted to the center of each cover. Pages 1-11, 24-50, 52-77 record accounts for the Hector, Liverpool, Hero and Swift (with pages 12-23 sometime excised and p. 51 omitted); then reversed and beginning at the other end of the volume, the remaining 93 pages record accounts for the Ann and cutter Bee, with 10 blank pages between the two sections.

Thomas Nast scrapbook related to the Heenan-Sayers heavyweight fight

    Manuscripts

Disbound scrapbook of pencil sketches made by American cartoonist Thomas Nast while traveling to and in England to cover the heavyweight boxing match between Englishman Thomas Sayers and American John C. Heenan on April 17, 1860. This scrapbook contains sketches Nast made before, during, and after the fight (though there are very few drawings related to the fight itself). Most of the drawings, which include rough sketches and more polished drawings, reflect the settings and people that Nast encountered between his arrival in England in February 1860 and the fight on April 17th. Images depict sailors and officers on the ship the City of Manchester, ship interiors, coastal landscapes, individuals and scenes in English towns, including both street scenes and room interiors. Details related to the boxers include their colors, rooms, and the boxers preparing with their trainers. In addition to the drawings, there are also photographs consisting of: a carte-de-visite of Thomas Nast (Page 1-a, 90-b, 91); James Price Jr. (Page 2-a); Captain James Price (Page 2-b); Tom Sayers (Pages 17-a, 59-a, 68-b, 68-c); an unidentified man (Page 45-f); Cusick (Page 46-d and 48-d); Nat Langham (Page 49-d); Bob Brettle (Page 50-e); an unidentified young woman kneeling next to a fallen horse (Page 53-c); a fragment of a garden and building (Page 82-a); and a man and woman (Page 82-b). There is also an engraved portrait of Nast (Page 90-c) and a playbill for the Haymarket Theatre Royal, 1885 July 15, removed from the album's back pastedown.
