Items matched to the ESTC may also be searched individually in the catalog. Individual internal title pages from Austin, William. On the peace [one-page handwritten description about the Treaty of Paris ending the French and Indian War]

    Rare Books

This volume contains 146 British satirical prints, dating from 1760-1790, which are either etched or engraved and pasted onto pages in general chronological order. Many of the prints are annotated with handwritten identifications, descriptions, dates, and reference numbers from the British Museum Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires (BM numbers) in an unidentified hand. Ten of the prints have hand coloring (see pp. 16, 49, 57, 61, 67, 69, 76, 84, 110, and 116). The prints reflect a variety of political topics including the influence of Lord Bute (John Stuart); the 1763 Peace of Paris at the end of the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War); the American Stamp Act; the 1783 Fox-North Coalition; the 1784 Westminster election; and the Warren Hastings trial. Some of the depicted individuals include King George III; Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland; Princess Augusta; Charles James Fox; Warren Hastings; William Murray, Earl of Mansfield; Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford; Fletcher Norton; William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham; John Russell, Duke of Bedford; John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute; John Wilkes; and Cecil Wray. Many artists, engravers, and printers are represented including artists Thomas Rowlandson and William Hogarth and publishers E. Darchery, S. W. Fores, H. Humphrey, and W. Humphrey. One print, "A Foreign Tree" (page 116), is dated as 1789, but appears to be from 1793-4 during the French "Reign of Terror." There are also two pages containing handwritten descriptions of events (pp. 8a, 87).

Royal Institute of British Architects. Hand list to the Burlington-Devonshire Collection Part II: Palladio and other drawings in seventeen bound volumes of Drawings by Palladio and others in the Burlington – Devonshire Collection (typescript, published by RIBA)

    Manuscripts

This collection contains the papers of English art historian Katharine Ada Esdaile (1881-1950), with the bulk of the materials relating to her research and writings on British monumental sculpture, sculptors, and church monuments from the medieval period to 19th century. Material types include personal writings, diaries, correspondence, business papers, family papers and photographs, research files and research notebooks, and miscellaneous published and unpublished materials. Notably the collection includes more than 600 chiefly pre-World War II visitor booklets and pamphlets produced locally by British churches and approximately 3500 photographs taken or collected by Esdaile of sculpture, often funerary monuments in English churches, ranging from large churches like Westminster Abbey to small rural parishes. This collection provides a resource for viewpoints on monumental sculpture in the early 20th century (for instance as represented in book reviews by Esdaile) and for information about Esdaile's experience as a woman art historian in the early 20th century. Given the broadness of Esdaile's scope, from medieval to 19th century British monumental sculpture, the collection is less useful for specific information about monuments or sculptors. In addition, many of Esdaile's attributions in her notes appear to have been based primarily on her own instincts and do not have citations. Many of Esdaile's notes are handwritten on small scraps of paper or are fragments, sometimes making the information difficult to parse. The collection is chiefly Esdaile's files, but the dates on some items (such as post-1950 booklets) indicate the collection was added to and used after her death, presumably by her son Edmund Esdaile, who also made notes on items in the collection and appears to have done the preliminary organization of the papers after Esdaile's death.

There are two boxes with various manuscripts of work by friends and family of Hansen including poems by FrancEyE, and drafts of novels: In Search of Truth by Chris Gugas and People Talking to Themselves by Armine D. There is a sizable amount of correspondence between Hansen and his publishers and agents including Collier Associates, Countryman Press; Holt, Rinehart & Winston; Harper & Row; the John Johnson Agency; Joan Kahn; and Penguin Books. In addition, there are also five folders of rejection letters sent to Hansen. Within Hansen's personal correspondence, notable correspondents include: British author Beryl Bainbridge, who befriended Hansen in the 1970s while Hansen was living in London; English composer and musician Richard Rodney Bennett; the publisher Brandon House, who put out Hansen's Colton books; gay filmmaker Arch Brown, who collaborated with Hansen on a playscript of Hansen's novel Backtrack, which was not produced; American crime fiction writer Dorothy Salisbury Davis, with whom Hansen corresponded regularly; poet, and girlfriend of Charles Bukowski, FrancEyE (aka Frances Dean Smith); American author Philip Gambone who published a profile of Hansen in Something Inside: Conversations with Gay Fiction Writers; poet and literary critic Diana Gioia; gay activist William "Billy" Glover, who worked at One magazine and after helped form the Homosexual Information Center in 1968; poet and literary critic William Harry Harding; gay activist Ross Ingersoll; poet Bill Mohr; critic Terry Teachout, who reviewed some of Hansen's novels; and crime writer Charles Ray Willeford. There are also insignificant pieces of correspondence from well-known individuals: James Blish, James Broughton, Sue Grafton, Tony Hillerman, George Plimpton, Julian Symons, and Andrew Vachss. Professional and personal materials include a variety of materials related to many different parts of Hansen's life, including business, publishing, and financial documents; miscellaneous ephemera, research materials; family papers, with writings and papers by Jane Bancroft Hansen as well as the Hansen's only child Daniel Hansen; press features on Hansen and reviews of his publications; materials related to Hansen's KFI radio program "Stranger from the Sea"; documents related to Hansen's teaching, chiefly at the UCLA extension school; miscellaneous materials related to Hansen's involvement with the gay community such as the Gay Community Services Center and the homosexual Information Center; and some materials related to his work on a 1970 issue of the literary magazine Beyond Baroque. The collection contains one box of photographs with images of Hansen throughout his life, as well as family members including Jane Bancroft Hansen and Daniel Hansen, and some friends and residences. The collection also contains approximately 70 drawings on paper presumably by Jane Hansen from the 1960s, of which many may have been created as part of art class.

The Book of Common Prayer : the James R. Page Collection loan exhibition held at the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, June 2, 1953

    Rare Books

Collection of more than 80 catalogs and gallery guides of exhibitions installed from 1929 to 2022 at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. The catalogs were intended for the reference use of the Library's Chief Curator of Rare Books and are often annotated with the call numbers of the Huntington holdings ues in the exhibits. The catalogs represented here focus primarily on the Library exhibit spaces: the Main Library Exhibit Hall and the West Hall. Later publications also record exhibits in the Dibner Hall of Sciences and the Boone Gallery. A few concern related exhibition material in the Art Collections. These catalogs represent the most comprehensive record of which library copies were displayed, especially for the years 1931-1975. Notations about the availability of photostats, facsimiles and slides as well as installation dates are included on some catalogs. Some catalogs have multiple copies marked for the Curator, Rare Book Stacks and the Exhibition Office. Material dated after 1980 shows fewer annotations, and are primarily in the form of gallery guides, rather than catalog listings of items on display. Additional unannotated Huntington publications regarding the collections are also included (e.g. Preliminary handbook of the art collections).
