Description: In this final collection, which was left virtually complete at the time of his death, James Wright returns with haunting insistence to the themes that have become hallmarks of one of the enduring poetic voices of our time: the evocation of the author's Ohio childhood and youth; the intense, minute observation of the daily life of the classic culture of Italy, that any modern American poet has achieved.--Jacket blurb.

The waves

Rare Books

Set on the coast of England against the vivid background of the sea, The Waves introduces six characters -- three men and three women -- who are grappling with the death of a beloved friend, Percival. Instead of describing their outward expressions of grief, Virginia Woolf draws her characters from the inside, revealing them through their thoughts and interior soliloquies. As their understanding of nature's trials grows, the chorus of narrative voices blends together in miraculous harmony, remarking not only on the inevitable death of individuals but on the eternal connection of everyone. The novel that most epitomizes Virginia Woolf's theories of fiction in the working form, The Waves is an amazing book very much ahead of its time. It is a poetic dreamscape, visual, experimental, and thrilling.

Scar tissue

Rare Books

"This haunting first monograph by Israeli-born photographer, Assaf Poker, 'Scar Tissue' reinvents photographic portraiture as a medium for communicating the deepest and darkest of human emotions. The artist's methodology is entirely focused on the cultivation of relationships: meeting with potential models one-on-one, sometimes for years, to talk and share mutual experiences of suffering, ultimately building a deep trust. It is this trust that allows the artist to capture the raw emotions surrounding human suffering and survival in this collection; it is the intense vulnerability of his subjects and the compassion between artist and model that unite the images in this powerful collection. IMages that might appear difficult to view at first become captivating--their beauty lying in the artist's skillful use of light and shadow in black and white, the immense care in the printing of the images (which gives them an even more poignant relevancy) and ultimately in the intense beauty of the artist at the apex of his creativity and technique"--Publisher's description.

The players

Rare Books

"This long-awaited publication presents 73 of Steinmetz's photographs of adolescent and teenage baseball players, on the field and in the dugout, focused on the game and lost in their own worlds. Made between 1986 and 1990, the photographs are classic Steinmetz: tenderness, humor, and humanism are all present here, as is Steinmetz's exquisite use of natural light and attention to poetic detail"--Publisher's description.

The longest journey

Rare Books

"E. M. Forster once described The Longest Journey as the book "I am most glad to have written." An introspective novel of manners at once comic and tragic, it tells of a sensitive and intelligent young man with an intense imagination and a certain amount of literary talent. He sets out full of hope to become a writer, but gives up his aspirations for those of the conventional world, gradually sinking into a life of petty conformity and bitter disappointments"--Goodreads.

Neco : photographs and illustrations

Rare Books

"Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1964, Yuichi Hibi trained as an actor and filmmaker, achieving success in a broad range of film and theater productions before moving to New York in 1988. It was at this time that he began to make photographs. Speaking virtually no English, Hibi was the quintessential outsider. His quietly intense images evoke a sense of longing and isolation, yet they also find beauty and order and meaning in overlooked places and things ... We are pleased to announce the artist's follow-up monograph, Neco ('Cat'). Spanning several years, the rich, grainy photographs of cats at rest, play, and on the hunt spill of the pages in this beautifully-produced artist's book. Rather than simply documenting the activities of cats he has come across over the years, Hibi has managed to capture the very essence of being feline"--Publisher's description.
